...the placebo effect.

This past Sunday I was traveling in the truck to pick up a buddy and go to the cottage. I turned on the tune box and almost every station was selling religion, homeopathic remedies, diet fads, get rich schemes etc etc etc. It dawned on me that everyone gave testament to it's effectiveness by anecdotal evidence that in reality reflected the minor effects of placebo.

Are people more seceptable to this flummery on a Sunday morning? Obviously the market people wouldn't be paying for the air time if it were not effective.

Any theories why the airwaves are crowded during these times? My own pet theory is the lower costs per hour and the spare time that a large part of society has during the weekend, but it seems there must be more than that.

I'm inclined to think your subject line hints to the reason(ing) behind the type of ads you're bombarded with. Sunday morning means church for a lot of people, including a lot of fringe churches, which in turn means that it's the right time to cater to a certain mind-set. (viz. believers) The lower cost, as you point out, is seen as bonus, I'm sure. :-)

Since I'm in Sweden and commercial radio is fairly new here (only some 10 years) we've yet to see the same trends or patterns here. Swedes're not, by and large, a church-going people either which may or may not influence the ads we get. It's clear, however, that the ads are tailored after the projected audience of the different channels, and I've yet to hear anything strikingly woowooish on any of my favourites. That is not to say that Swedes are any less prone to silliness or that other channels don't have that kind of ads.

Sunday morning radio advertising can be incredibly cheap. A one-minute spot on this drive-time AM station that would cost you $90 during morning drive-time, on M-F 7P-12A and SS 6A-12A is only $35.
