“and do the other things”
40 years after the moon landing when fellow Ohio boy Neal made history I have a question?

What the hell were the “other things” Kennedy was referring too?

As in “We vow to go the moon in this decade and DO THE OTHER THINGS”., ??????

Fine we went to the moon, it was truly a great event but did we do the other things?
This speech is being played nearly every 5 minutes but does anyone have a clue what Kennedy was referring to. “Other things” seems kind of vague.

He refers to the things he mentions earlier in his speech such as "Why climb the highest mountains? Why 35 years ago fly the atlantic?..."

Why is he pledging to do things already done?

He doesn't, he pose the retorical question Why do we do these things as in why did they cross the atlantic?, why climb a mountain? Why go to the moon?. His answer is because they are hard.

So the anwer to you is he doesn't pledge to do the other things he's telling us why we do things like this and that's the reason why we should go to the moon.Because it's there and it's difficult.

There were quite a few milestones on the path to putting a man on the moon. Stuff like putting a vehicle in lunar orbit. Putting a manned craft in lunar orbit. Docking two craft in space. And so on.

All of it - if the rumours are true, without leaving a sound stage:jaw-dropp

That seems like a rather daft motto.
Unboiling an egg is hard.
Boiling one is both easy and useful.

Don't forget playing golf.

JFK was mainly talking about having a BBQ in the backyard, giving rock climbing a try at least once, and catching up on all those books he'd been meaning to read but never quite found the time.

Unfortunately, he was killed before he could get around to rock climbing, which is one of the lesser-known tragedies of his assassination.

To be cheeky, maybe adding an extra tryst per week with Marilyn was the other thing.
But I’d bet that the speech as it was written included a “list” of “other things”, as was eluded too in earlier parts of the speech.
You notice that he flubbed it after the “why does Rice play Texas” bit. Repeating the “we pledge to go to the moon”.

Great! After hearing that so many times yesterday (and still almost daily in that Omega watch commercial), I finally understand it.

I will from now on hear it as "We choose to go to the moon, and [we also] do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard."

Check the link, and read the speech.

The relevant text reads: "We choose to go to the moon and do the other things, ..."

The Rice speech was held in September 1962, after he made the vow to go to the moon in May 1962.

Purposely vague.

1. It was a political speech and
2. There may be "other things" that would present themselves sometime in the future

"and do the other things"

As opposed to the main thing, Jackie Kennedy.

I've alway thought that phrase "do the other things" was a bit awkward, especially when (as usually) quoted slightly out of context.
Probably too late to change it now.
One small step for man (sic) etc...
