Being the recent purchaser of a new portable shortwave set (the Chinese version of a Grundig FR200 -- I'm pleasantly surprised with the selectivity and sensitivity), I noticed something the other night while tuning the bands...

Is it just me, or are the wide majority of the English-language shortwave broadcasts of the religious persuasion? I mean, fer cripes sake, I was running across Gene Scott so often across the spectrum I was starting to smell cigar smoke coming from the speaker...

Just curious...any other radio fanatics out there who'd care to check and comment on this?

Later...I gotta go cut the grass...

We Americans are obsessed with religion. So far the religious community has inundated every American media source ever invented. You can find religion on the radio, on TV, in the newspapers, on the Internet, etched on a bathroom stall, everywhere.

I try to ignore all that religion I find everywhere, because its no better than a bad advertisement. Sorry, God, religion just doesnt sell no more.

I noticed this a few years ago. Except for VOA and CBC if it comes from north America it’s either religious broadcasting (usually fundamentalist) or conspiracy wacos. Try Brother Stair at 9475 kHz, I bet billiefan2000 is a regular listener.

Hang in there and you'll smell horse-puckies as well.

I'm surprised that doofus is still around. I could never understand his delivery of sitting in a Lazy-Boy, smoking a cigar, and berating his viewers. His shots of his horse farm made no sense whatsoever, unless it was to show donors where the money went.

For awhile, way back when I was younger, I recall Robin Williams doing a Gene Scott schtick on Comedy Relief (or sumpin' like that), and that convinced me to at least check ol' Gene out. Gotta admit, at 3ayem on cable channel 163,884 , he was good for a couple of yuks...didn't hold my interest that long, though...he went the way of all effluvia...

What surprises me is that, even though he seems to be in court being sued every other week, he is still going. Comes in strong in the South of England on 6,110KHz in the early afternoon; I think he is re-broadcast from a German site.
