Not my words, but the words of a senior Tory MP:

A senior Tory MP is said to have predicted David Cameron will be ousted in a backbench coup next spring during a secretly recorded conversation at a party.

Patrick Mercer is said to have told a guest he would rather have "a beggar off the street" in Downing Street than his party leader.

Mercer agreed that he had "had a conversation with a number of people" that had been taped, but he strongly denied the recording backed up the claims that he had insulted Cameron. The material had been obtained "by subterfuge", he complained, adding that he was consulting his lawyers.

The former army officer was sacked as a shadow minister by Cameron in 2007 for making inappropriate comments about ethnic minority soldiers and is known to be a critic of the prime minister.

Among insults he was said by the Sunday People and Sunday Mirror to have levelled at Cameron were calling him a "despicable creature without any redeeming features", an "arse" and "the worst politician in British history since William Gladstone" – one of Mercer's predecessors as the MP for Newark.

Maybe this doesn't really deserve its own thread, but I wanted to start it just for the thread title :)

I don't understand, the post appears to be about the British Prime Minister, but the thread title is about the Australian Opposition Leader.

You know, I can't help but think that they're all sleepers that Alex Salmond put in position years ago, because heaven knows both the Tories and Labour seem hell-bent on a path of self destruction.

This is not a complaint, I hasten to add, hell-med the lot of them.

The trouble with Cameron (well, one of the troubles) is that he looks as though he is made of shiny plastic. However, I'm not too minded to take the comments of a racist such as Mercer very seriously.

I would agree with Architect's comment but with the addition of the LibDems; they are also hell-bent on a path to self destruction.

It's bad enough when one cannot vote for the best candidate, only the least worst. I can see a time when I will be spoiling my ballot paper for I cannot bring myself to vote for any party at all.

I thought the title was about the entire GOP field of Presidential candidates.

As to the OP, letting the person who you are planning on overthrowing know that you are planning on overthrowing them seems counterproductive. You'd think politicians would know better than to let themselves be recorded by now.

Let's face it, if he were in a 1980s Brat Pack film he'd be the smarmy rich one played by James Spader, making fun of the poor kids.

However, I'm not too minded to take the comments of a racist such as Mercer very seriously.

All the more so on this side of the Border.

Thankfully we have the fourth option here.

So a Tory back-bencher who was once sacked by Cameron for making inappropriate remarks about minorities still has an axe to grind?

This would seem to reveal more about Mercer than about Cameron.

I think Dave should kick this chap out of the party.

:D

(But I bet he doesn't)
