What I'm asking is if by the end of Gorge Bush's reign of terror will America be completely ruled over by christian fundamentalists?

I killed the troll and the space under the bridge is now free for little red riding hood, Hansel, Gretel, Goldilocks, Thumbelina, Jack and the others.:)

No.

I don't particularly like Bush, but some of the scaremongering is just hilarious.

Bush appears to be extending the reach of government into the private sphere in ways many people dislike. But he is not yet, nor ever will be, a totalitarian dictator. He may appear to be one at times to some people, but he is not.

Bush is supported by a wide range of right wing groups in the US, including the fundies, however there are many other right-wing groups in America that bush relied on for support, and whilst other right-wingers will make concession (often very public concessions) to the fundi right, never assume that Bush is totally in thrall to the fundies.

Even if pat Robinson where elected president tomorrow, there are enough safeguards in the constitution to prevent the US getting anywhere near resembling "Iraq's past".

And even if most of the constitutional safeguards are negated, the fundies would probably only manage to take parts of the Us back to the 19th century, not the 12th. ;)

AS much as I despise the little weasel, the fact that you can post that without any real fear of being dragged off into the night shows that it hasn't quite reached 'reign of terror' status.

He probably meant "reign of terror" for the rest of the world.

question - uruk

answer - why, yes I am

ladies and gentlemen, the post before me came from the prince of maine!

The fact that he still has no fear of being dragged off for typing that, also indicates that bush has not yet risen to the level of reign of terror "for the rest of the world".

ETA- I realy resent this you know. I dispise Bush, and you guys are makign me defend him. ;)

Sorry, I couldn't find a "toung in cheek" smiley. There are too many checks and balances to allow a single man or group in the US to create a reign of terror. In or out of the US. McCarthy came close but it doesn't take long before the american public loses interest and the fool fades away. Religeous groups can come into power and shake things up, but it doesn't last long. Prohibition comes to mind. The religeous nuts had a good run but people like thier inebriants.

The longest you can be president in the US is eight years. If the Democrats win the election you'll see US troops pull out of Iraq faster than you can say "let's go to McDonalds". If the republicans win, it won't be much longer before public disinterest forces troop withrawal. Bush is already figthing to get money to continue operations in Iraq. Look at what public disinterest did to the space program.

The best way I can put it is the pendulum always swings back and forth.

No, you're all confused. He's talking about Gorge Bush. That's Gorge III, King of England, of the House Saxe-Coburg-Bush. Ruled 317-310BC. And it wasn't a "reign of terror"; that's a mistranscription from the Celtic records of the day. It was a rain of termites. They did enormous damage to the largely timber structures of early London, leading in one notorious instance to the collapse of the original London Bridge. After that, Gorge and his termites were exiled to what is now Brittany in France, but was at that time known as Armorica.

You can see how the confusion arose.
