PHILADELPHIA -- Phoenix is poised to replace Philadelphia as the nation's fifth-largest city.

As Phoenix and other Western cities have expanded to accommodate a steady stream of newcomers, Philadelphia and other industrial cities in the Northeast have seen hundreds of thousands of residents abandon their crowded neighborhoods for roomier suburbs.

In the 2000 census, Philadelphia held onto its status as the nation's fifth-largest city, even though it saw its official population count dip to 1,517,550, down 10 percent from a decade earlier. Phoenix, meanwhile, surged 34 percent in the 1990s to 1,321,190.

Any theories on why people are moving South?

THe west and southern cities are much larger (land wise). The city limits go on and on. Philly proper may be lsoing people, but most of them just run to the burbs.

People are moving south n west cause of the lower cost of living. In Mass the average price of a home is near $400K ( no foolin).

$400,000 would get you a manison in other parts of the country.

It comes before Philly in the song "Keep On Rockin' Me Baby" by Steve Miller:

I went from Phoenix, Arizona, all the way to Tacoma
Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.
Northern California, where the girls are warm
So I could hear my sweet baby say

Keep on a-rockin' me, baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby
Keep on a rockin' me baby

Shows how far ahead Steve Miller thought these things out.

Charlie (now I got that stupid song in my head!) Monoxide

Until you get to Cali where the average home price is north of that. I hear homes in Arizona are very cheap, though.

Sure. People are getting old. Florida's booming the same way, even though I know from firsthand experience that Sarasota turns over roughly 80% of its population annually. That's why we call it God's Waiting Room.

Everyone here is either on their way to a beach or a graveyard.

Why are they moving south?

BECAUSE THEY ARE BLOODY OLD!

Bastards driving 10 mph in their RV's with a freaking car in a trailer behind.

You've finally decided that being freezing cold and not seing the sun for three months out of the year suck. Only took you 60 years to figure that one out. Fine, you're retired, congratulations - I'm not and I've got things to do other than take in the sights, so park that beast in Yuma and head over to the casino in Lake Havasu but get out of the way.

In any case, unless people keep coming to the southwest then Pheonix' population will drop to less than 750,000 in a couple of years once the current crop of octogenarians drops off.

Welcome to Arizona!

Now go home.
