Hi all,

I was curious if thre were any previous insights into the healing work of Alan Ames (alanames dot org). I searched the randi web site but was not able to find anything. He has the backing of the catholic church as well (well to some degree).

He is currently touring the US. According to his web site, he will in several places througout the US in March.

I thought I'd bring this up in case he has not all ready gotten an objective look. I have not seen him personally, but thought he may be a person worth looking into. Might this be someone Mr. Randi may be interested in investigating?

Moron fodder. Do you qualify? Can you afford to qualify?

Moochie,

Have you heard of of him in Aussieland?

I was searching about the general web trying to get some details on him. As a good skeptic, when I hear the mention of a healer, my guard goes up. My first thoughts were to see if he had already been checked out or may be a potential future research project.

Bleeding pieces of plastic, face of Jesus from oil drops, etc. What more do you need to throw this nutter into the woo pile? And there is nothing here to investigate - unless you think silliness is a valid research topic.

You're going to have to refurbish your self-description as a "good skeptic".

Sezme,

Who would be a good skeptic? One who dismisses things without investigating (cynic), or one who investigates? My goal here is to bring this before the community for possible consideration/investigation. Not to be berated.

Thanks,

I investigated by going to his web site and reading his claims. His claims are ludicrous. Period.

I am not "the community" but I did consider this. I found it wanting. Now what?

More specifically, what investigation would you propose? What claim of Alan's did you find credible that you would like to see investigated? What evidence other than his web site do you suggest be considered to support or refute his claims.

Do you have any claims regarding this matter that you would like to put on the table? What evidence can you adduce to support such claims?

And so on.

Be a good skeptic and get specific so we can have a substantative discussion.

Finally, I say that in all seriousness, not to berate you.

He looks to be the garden variety small time faith healer. Unless he gets a lot of media attention as Peter Popoff did, he's not going to get much of James Randi's notice. These come and go.

Welcome to the JREF Forums!
Don't mind posters who assume you are a woo-woo salesman off the bat.

We've been burned lately by some who have joined just to evangelize to we 'sinners.' It's irritating and some of us are venting at anyone that might be on another mission to save us.

SezMe,

Thanks! :) What caught my eye with this gent was the testimonials that he hadlisted on his site. Honestly, I would have though that someone who supposedly holds services for hundreds at a time would have a larger number of testimonials. What is listed though seemed like it was worth the raising his presence.

It may be that he is "yet another healer". We have been there before. Being in the states, I wasn't sure if someone near where he would be going might like to check him out. I see him listed as Australia as his place of home. I wasn't sure if he was worth the look while in the States.

Hyparxis,

Thanks! :) On this one, I am really neutral. I surely do not want to appear as a supporter of his work.

Ahh...things may be a bit sensitive because of the recent past. I can understand that. Ohhh..I had been looking at the discovery channel web site. They have some forums on the "tomb of jesus". It's original intent was for some good academic discussion of what was in the investigation and what was lacking. There were (and still are) some high rollers/evangelists doing the same thing there of quoting verses and challenging science with their faith. I feel that they believe it is a mission of God they are fulfilling. (ok) It can really interfere with a decent discussion.

According to the video vlip on his web page (the one from San Antonio news 2003) this guy claims (I may get some of the words wrong, but) "it doesnt matter if you love God, he loves you and wants to heal you".
:) So at least his exuse for not taking the million dollar test shouldnt be that Randi is unGodly, since if God can heal and love atheists then he can certainly tolerate allowing this guy to take Randis test (of course just in order to donate the money to charity like a good healer should).

Other than that I got nothing out of him except he's clearly just another lying fraud.
Id be very intersted in seeing that woman Lindas (from the video I mentioned) medical records starting way before her supposed miraculous healing and her medical records way after her supposed miraculous healing.
Im quite sure we'd find a much different story to her/her illnesses than that video presented.

Edit: Well I nearly shocked myself while browsing his webpage because for a minute there I thought I may have at least discovered a fraud who actually does NOT hawk all sorts of their own books, videos, trinckets (etc, etc, etc) but of course then I saw his Publications page.

Another Edit: Oh *****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just discovered Alan is going to be doing a healing mass at the The Cure of Ars church in Merrick NY (one town away from me) TONIGHT at 7pm and its now 5:42pm. Im DYING to go see him now. Im so conflicted as to if I should call my friend and just go for the experience.
Ill update later.

Nah, never heard of him. But then, I'm unlikely to given I don't mix in those circles.

My update for anyone who cares :D

Well my friend didnt get here till around 7:35pm so we didnt go. The woman on the phone said i could show up at anytime but I dont go to church and wouldve felt too weird walking in late on some most likely weirdo congregation whilst they were probably in awe of this fraud.
Im so disgusted with myself for not just going despite my reservations: I hate when I do this.
Now when in my lifetime will I ever again get the chance to see miracles performed by Alan or any other healer?!? :(

JeffJ,

That would have been great to get a glimpse of this healer and be able to share what he was like. Sorry that the timing didn't work out. :( Maybe someone else on the board may be able to catch him.

I know... and it was such an unusual thing that I happen to view your thread on that day, then went to his web page to discover he was going to be one town away within the next hour and a half (or whatever the exact time was) which was his only appearance in NY.
Id love to know why he chose an obscure church in Merrick NY, out of all places in NY, and for only one appearance.
Anyway if I wasnt such a skeptical non believer I might think it was divine intervention. :D

Yeah, maybe someone else will catch him elsewhere.
