With over 90% of the country under the control of the drug/war lords and narcoterrorists, a breakaway or splinter fraction of the Taliban is back in business in Afghanistan. Bush supporters may remember the Taliban, since the President says he got rid of them. Yeah, but stuff happens.

UN workers taken in Afghanistan
By Waheedullah Massoud in Kabul
November 1, 2004

A BREAKAWAY Taliban group has threatened to execute three foreign hostages by Wednesday unless foreign troops and the UN leave Afghanistan and the US releases all Taliban prisoners.

The demands were issued early today shortly before al-Jazeera broadcast the first images of the three UN workers, British-Irish woman Annetta Flanigan, Kosovar Shqipe Habibi and Filipino Angelito Nayan in captivity.

I get sick of hearing the mantra that Afghanistan is a better place today!
If it is can people explain then why MSF has pulled out? I have two friends working in Afghanistan right now. Both for NGOs. Both of them are in Kabul. They are not allowed to leave Kabul AT ALL.
They tell me in regular emails that the situation is terrible. In actuallity, Karzai (the former UNOCAL Man--no coincidence there, methinks), doesn't even properly control Kabul.

Here's what the democracy loving former Unocal employee said at a press conference with Donald Rumsfeld:
"With regard to multiple registration of voters, we don’t really know if 1,000 people or 2,000 people or 3,000 people or 100,000 people have two registration cards. And as a matter of fact, it doesn’t bother me. If Afghans have two registration cards because they like to vote twice, well, welcome. This is an exercise, then let them exercise it twice. But it will not have an impact on the election."

The Taliban are on the rise again as has already been said, and women are returning to wearing the Burqa. Widespread electoral fraud is suspected in the recent "elections".
And the heroin trade is up by something like 40-50% again. But I suppose that is because, as Rummy said "freedom is a beautiful thing....stuff happens"......???!!!??!!!!!

Just another farce by the people who brought you "uncle Sam".

Karzia is a puppet of the American dictators. The media in America have been busy hailing the election in Afghanistan as a great success , a triumph for democracy and stability, while the American government has just placed the government of Belarus (white Russia), under a sanctions regime .
Following a vote in the American congress , a bill was passed known as "The Act of Democracy in Belarus". They are complaining about the lack of democracy and the country`s poor human rights record.
So there we have it, more double standards from the Bush regime. Alexander Lukashenko's regime is bad, but Karzia's is "democratic".
Lukashenko orients himself towards the influence of Russia. Hence the difference in attitude. The Americans have plans to bring down Lukashenko's regime and replace it with a more pro American one. This is the same rationale they applied in Georgia recently.

I've just finished reading Seymour Hersh's "Chain of Command". Please, take a suggestion and get yourself a copy: it makes a frightening and eye opening read.

Schuerer (the CIA counter-terror / bin Laden honcho) states that the day the US departs Afghanistan that Karzai will topple faster than you can whistle dixie, that Karzai has zero support in the country, that the notion of western democracy in Afghanistan is hallucinagenic to an extreme, that experts on the region within the US govt were ignored, that history was ignored.

I never heard that all the taliban remnants were defeated. We've had news reports of encounters with them since the fall of Kabul.

As much as some of you claim the Bush is Orwellian, I think a few of you physicians should heal yourselves.
