Hi everyone.
My parents are in need of a new phone (old one is getting really crappy on the reception).
Problem is that they want a no frills phone: Clear buttons, phone and sms only, easy to figure out. And those are getting harder and harder to get by.

Their old phone is a nokia non-smartphone and I was wondering,as a possible alternative, if anyone knows of an app or a way of making an android phone boot as at least a graphical version of a button phone instead of a mini-computer?

Same thing with my dad. He gets too confused with smartphones and so we just went into T-Mobile (his carrier) and asked for a dumb phone and they pulled out a few from under the counter. I take it from that that many carriers still sell them, but just don't bother displaying them any longer because they rarely sell.

When I went to T-Mobile this past Monday to buy a smartphone, they had flip phones on display, so they're definitely still out there. Look, and ask, around.

There are more than a few Android apps designed to simplify phones for seniors, so there really isn't a need to look for a more primitive phone. I think it's better to keep hardware up to date when you're buying new stuff. It'll obsolesce soon enough on its own.

Here's an article about some launchers specifically designed for simplicity, with seniors in mind.

There's plenty more out there. I just Googled "senior friendly apps for android" and found enough for a good start.

Ty all. Theres a lot of good advice here. I harrassed my parents to go into the nearest phone outlet with me and managed to browbeat the salesperson into showing me their "old" models XD. Between my parents and I, we managed to secure a Nokia fairly close to the model they are used to. more accurately a 301. While the buttons isnt as big in the printed numbers as they could have wanted, the numbers on the display is big enough that they can catch any errors.

This is a good phone:

This is as smart as I need (and It's easy to see the numbers).

The problem with that style is that it can "butt dial" too easily. As I recall, the upper left button is 911, or it used to be at least.

I have been very happy with a flip phone, in particular the Z222 ($10.00) which is used with ATT GoPhone, for $100 flat fee per year, 2000 minutes. More than enough for the casual user. AT&T help centers are very good for helping the not so experienced users.
