Actors who act different characters

How about doing it in the same movie? Peter Sellers in "Dr. Strangelove" f. inst. is IMHO one of the truly awesome performances in movie history. Or on a brighter note Alec Guiness in Kind Hearts and Coronets.

Gary Oldman. Some of his roles:

Hannibal (2001) .... Mason Verger
Contender, The (2000) .... Rep. Sheldon Runyon
Jesus (1999) (TV) .... Pontius Pilate
Lost in Space (1998) .... Dr. Zachary Smith
Air Force One (1997) .... Ivan Korshunov
Fifth Element, The (1997) .... Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg
Immortal Beloved (1994) .... Ludwig van Beethoven
True Romance (1993) .... Drexl Spivey
Dracula (1992) .... Dracula
JFK (1991) .... Lee Harvey Oswald
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1990) .... Rosencrantz

The liner notes to the laserdisc say that he was scheduled to do the Slim Pickens role as well, but he sprained his ankle and they didn't think he'd be able to crawl around in the set easily. Which is fine, because I think that Slim Pickens was just fabulous.

Russell Crowe. Loathsome skinhead (Romper Stomper) to adorable gay guy (The Sum of Us) to psycho cop with Galahad complex (LA Confidential) to fiftyish whistleblower (The Insider) to hot Roman gladiator (er...Gladiator) - quite a range.

Chris Cooper.

WHO?

He played the trainer in "Seabiscuit". He also played the strange orchid thief in "Adaptation", the psycho neighbor in "American Beauty", and Robert Redford's brother in "Horse Whisperer". I can't believe those are the same person.

Dustin Hoffman has also always struck me as a complete chameleon.

From the good old days: Robert Mitchum and Burt Lancaster.

Chris Cooper, yeah! Add to that list his hilarious dumbo politician in Silver City, and the integrity-laden sheriff in Lone Star. He's very fine.

Kilmer

Val Kilmer is another chameleon. From Jim Morrison to Pure Genius to the Iceman to plenty of others. He seems to have pissed off some people and has fallen out of favor these days, but he's a talented actor.

Agreed ;) I also LOVED him in "Blazing Saddles".. He on the other hand was probably (next to John Wayne) one of the most "Type casted" actors in Hollywood

Anthony Hopkins, the king of them all.

Deranged serial killer...Silence of the Lambs
Reserved butler...Remains of the Day
Zorro (which is amazing since he is, as one review put it, about as Latin as blood pudding)...The Mask of Zorro
A black man....The Human Stain (I never saw it, but I heard that was the twist. Sorry if I ruined it for you)

Eric Bana

When I saw "The Hulk" I wasn't too thrilled.

Then I saw "Chopper" and I realised why they hired him.

Andre Braugher probably won't be familiar to many here, but an enormous talent with a wide range of roles performed at award winning intensity.

Eric started off as a stand up comdian, progressed to sketch comedy on tv and on to film. Chopper is, in a way, a very dark interpretation of a character he played on TV, poiter. But it was a chilling portrayal of a certifiable lunatic.

In contrast, look at Batman, Tim Burton thought it would be good to get a comedian to play against type in the Batman role and cast Michael Keaton. Total disaster, and utterly unconvincing. I can suspend my sense of disbelief, and think there is a guy running around in a campy suit fighting crime, but I can't accept a clumsy pout as someone being tough.

Ed Norton certainly can. I just say Fight Club, and couldn't believe it was the same guy from "American History X". Nice for a change.

You just saw Fight Club? What took you so long?

I agree 100% about Ed Norton.

I got so spoiled by "Homicide" and him, I have not been able to watch another cop show with any regularity.

What else is he good in?
