STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. — The American Civil Liberties Union (search), perhaps better known for helping keep religion out of the classroom, came to the defense of a high school graduate whose yearbook entry was censored because it contained a biblical verse.

The organization's Michigan chapter announced a settlement Tuesday with Utica Community Schools that restores Abby Moler's message to Stevenson High School's (search) 2001 yearbook.

ARe you happy or upset about this? ACLU have never been your favorites.

I think its cool. Whats the big deal on some no offensive biblical personal message in a yearbook?

Holy shoot, what will Bill OReilly have to say?

But I have a question. I don't see an AP by-line on this or anything. Does that mean it was written by Fox News?

If so, I'd like to inquire about the statement "The American Civil Liberties Union, perhaps better known for helping keep religion out of the classroom,..."

I thought that Fox News was supposed to be "We report, you decide"? If that is the case, what is this little editorializing doing in there?

It may be the case that the ACLU is better known for helping keep religion out of the classroom, but it is irrelevent to this case. Shouldn't I be the one to decide that this is ironic? Fox News, if it were really "We report, you decide" would have no business highlighting that aspect.

Just another example of how it is just more of the same...

It is an AP story. Look under "Wednesday, May 12, 2004" and above "STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich.".

I think it demonstrates that the ACLU at least tries to show that it's fair. I do, however think this is a victory for free-speech, so I guess you could say I'm happy.

And why do you think the ACLU isn't one of my favorites? I've said many times that I support them.

Since these are personal thoughts from a student who was asked to convey them, I see nothing wrong with them being included in the yearbook. It doesn't appear that she is claiming to represent the school's point of view.
These are sentiments that are personal to her.

Of course, one would hope than an atheist student, or Wiccan, or someone of an "alternative" persuasion would also be able to express sentiments of an equally personal nature if asked to do so.
Equal time means equal time.

Of course, would an atheist sentiment in yearbook be perceived the same as a christian sentiment? Maybe by the ACLU, but I bet the average joe might not be as tolerant.

Yep, I see it now. In that case, Fox is not part of it.
