Higher abortion rates where procedure is illegal

LONDON – Abortion rates are higher in countries where the procedure is illegal and nearly half of all abortions worldwide are unsafe, with the vast majority in developing countries, a new study concludes.

Confirms my theory that the best way to reduce abortion is for everyone to have access to sex education, family planning and especially contraceptives.

I also believe that giving the least developed country aid for family planning and contraceptives now would reduce the need for emergency famine relief later.

Absolutely. Also, if you look at the statistics of states that teach preach abstinance only, as opposed to safe sex practices and access to contraceptives, you will also find that those are the states with the highest teen pregnancy rates. I don't know what it will take to make those people realize that education is always better than pretending it's not there.

You might want to factor in demographic and cultural influences. I say this with regard to a national leader in teen prego stats, Southern Texas, with which I have some familiarity.

Some of the leadership comes from habits that have nothing to do with whatever misguided policies arise in Austin from time to time.

Where is JB when you need him? I'm sure he could convince us that it's far better that abortion be illegal than risk the side effects.

I have to admit, I've read and reread this, slowly, multiple times. I am not sure what you are saying.

I am curious, do regions like Africa and South America ban abortion procedures? The report cites more conservative abortions laws, but many in the U.S. are pushing for the ban of most if not all abortion. I wasn't really able to find anything but Wikipedia, which I didn't think was all that updated or comprehensive.

The best way to prevent kids from drowning is to simply tell them not to go into the water. That should be enough, right? I mean, these kids don't need to be taught how to swim... "Just say no" to the water!

;)

Seems obvious, since countries where it's illegal are generally also countries with no access to conraception, sex education, etc. But this doesn't mean abortion is a good thing, or that abortion is higher in places where it is easier that DO have access to conraceptions and sex education.

I checked the statistics in NYC. The abortion rate there is 40% -- and more than 60% among Blacks (other statistics say). So much for "safe, legal, and rare".

In NY, at least, so-called "family planning" is really the putting into practice of the early 20th century's eugenicists' dreams of mass elimination of people with darker skin, only this time, they do it to themselves.

Is this really true? I imagine it is.

This is unrelated but this also suggests we should decriminalize drugs.

LOL. That is a good one. Shows how stupid that argument is, no matter what the subject.

I think one of the more interesting statistics is the rate of medically "unsafe" abortions in these countries. I believe the report cites them as something like 40-50%.

Except that even after all these abortions black women in NYC still have higher birth rate than whites. Hardly "elimination of people with darker skin".

The eugenicist's method was to support anything that lowers the birth rate of the "inferior races". Abortion does just that in NYC: it cuts Black people's birth rate by more than 1/2, much more than it cuts down on White people's birth rate. (Not that racial disproportionality is by any means the worst thing about such a massive abortion rate).

Nobody can claim that in New York -- of all places -- contraception, sex education, or open discussion of sexual topics are somehow supressed, leading to women getting pregnant due to forced ignorance. It's just that abortion, once made normative, then, far from being "safe, legal, and rare", it becomes very common.

Can I ask why Legal abortions reduces the overall cases or why "abstinence only" means a greater abortion rate? It's something I never understood myself.

If you're going to claim some sort of eugenicist's plot, evidence would be appreciated. Otherwise you're simply using women of color to promote an agenda that would deny them the option of choice. This may come as a bit of a shock but people of color are able to make adult choices. As individuals they are able to weigh all available information and decide what is best for their individual situation.

I suspect, that regarding your first point, the issue is more a symptom than a cause; as already stated lack of access to legal induced abortion in an indicator of lack of access to effective contraception (and contraceptive advice), poor sex education and other factors making crisis pregnancies more likely.
As for your second point "abstinence only" sex education doesn't lead to either later onset of sexual activity or lessened activity but is more likely to lead to unplanned pregnancy, especially given the habit of such programmes of providing misleading or outrightly untrue information on contraception.
Research indicates, and has done so for at least five years, that comprehensive sex education programmes generally lead to later sexual activity and reduced pregnancy and STI rates.
