A very bookish conspiracy. You can be part of it.

The many highly intelligent skeptics on this site have been itching to participate in a bona fide conspiracy – one that is entirely verifiable – and now their chance has come. Nothing too demanding, nothing too dangerous, nothing illegal…striking a blow on behalf of smart people everywhere.

There’s a dreadful website called “Authonomy”, run by Rupert Murdoch’s HarperCollins publishing conglomerate (the leviathan that produces so much of the trash that litters the bookshelves of our nations). The aim of Authonomy is to use the technique of “crowdsourcing” to find new writing talent. In practice, it amounts to desperate wannabe writers begging other writers to vote for them in the most shameless and degrading way. Each month, five books get ‘elected’ by the Authonomy community and are presented to HarperCollins’ editors for consideration for publication. The whole thing is ghastly – like the X-factor for novelists. A group of us are hoping to discredit this dreadful site, so we’ve nominated five obscure novels on the site that we want to ramp into the top five to show how pathetic the system is.

Do you want to help out with this small-scale, symbolic attack on the Murdoch media empire? It’s no more than a gesture against the cynical greed machine, but it’s a start. Just think of the warm feeling you will get from becoming an official conspirator.

All you have to do is log on to www.authonomy.com. You just need to give an email address, a password and a username. You don't need to fill in any other details. Do a search on 1) "Trashland”, 2) “Bling" (The Last Bling King), 3) "Jacuzzi" (Jacuzzi Sans Frontieres), 4) “Euphoria” and 5) “Pendulum” (The Pendulum and the Fog). Vote for all five books that you find via these searches by choosing the "back the book icon". That’s it. Finito. Then sit back and watch if our conspiracy works. We’ll know by the end of the month if the game has worked.

Can skeptics unite and change things? This is a small-scale test of that principle. I doubt it will succeed since there's way too much cynicism, apathy and inaction on here, but you never know.

Long live the revolution (as they say somewhere).

Well, since you asked nicely.

Or, you know, they disagree with your assessment of this website, and its worth.

Isn't there some sort of rule against advertising in your posts? This seems to be little more than a book plug.

Your assertion that the whole thing is "ghastly" has not convinced me. Chalk it down to cynicism, apathy, and inaction if you like, but no, I'm not going to help you.

23 threads and 26 posts. You are really going to have to participate in one of your threads if anyone is going to take you seriously.

Yeah, some of my favourite authors are published by HarperCollins. And "trash" is subjective. And publishing is a very tough racket to break into. and this seems to be a largely populist and merit-based way to get in the door, at first glance. So, no. Not going to join you in your windmill-tilting.

Go save a whale or something.

I certainly have no desire to join Blue_Sargasso's crusade. Quite the opposite, in fact. A quick look around at authonomy.com and I find it rather interesting.

From the FAQ page:
"authonomy invites unpublished and self published authors to post their manuscripts for visitors to read online. Authors create their own personal page on the site to host their project - and must make at least 10,000 words available for the public to read."

"Visitors to authonomy can comment on these submissions – and can personally recommend their favourites to the community. authonomy counts the number of recommendations each book receives, and uses it to rank the books on the site. It also spots which visitors consistently recommend the best books – and uses that info to rank the most influential trend spotters."

Sounds like a fun way to find new reading material.

Hey, this looks like a great site. The concept is sound, even if the execution isn't quite what it could be.

I think Blue Sargasso is looking at this the wrong way. Sure, very often, the top three works will be crap. Most work is crap...sad, but true. But, if there is a work of merit in there, it has a good chance of rising to the top.

If he wants to prove this system doesn't work, getting poor quality works into the top three will demonstrate nothing. To prove the system doesn't work, he will have to introduce a piece that is good and show that it doesn't get into the top three, while inferior works did.

Now, having praised the concept, let me say that I suspect their implementation may be a little lacking. But, hey, you have to start somewhere!

I'm not a big fan of crusades, and I have to state for the record that this has nothing to do with the JREF.

Wouldn't it be a pity if someone reported this stupid endeavour to the website. I say that, because it could result in the disqualification of those titles which is a real shame for the people who spent their time and efforts writing them.

Or, the whole thing is a silly cynical effort to 'hoodwink' us into voting for titles which the OP writer has a vested interest in.
