I think that sentence needs to be rethought! While many moderate Muslims voice opposition to these acts, it is after-the-fact, and this opposition does nothing to actually counter the extremism in the sense that it makes it weaker.
Muslim World League chief says Rushdie attack ‘unacceptable’ to Islam
Secretary-General of the Muslim World League Muhammad bin Abdul Karim al-Issa said that the attack on acclaimed author Salman Rushdie in New York was “a crime that Islam does not accept” in an interview with Saudi news outlet Arab News.
“Islam is against violence and can never admit any method of violence. Religious and intellectual issues, including phrases that may read in full or partly as offensive, cannot never be dealt with in these violent ways,” al-Issa was quoted as saying on the sidelines of a conference on inter-religious dialogue in Rimini, Italy.
Al-Issa is considered a leading global voice on moderate Islam as well as a key figure in the fight against extremist ideology.[2][3] Religious leaders and government officials alike have commended Al-Issa for his efforts to promote moderation, and cooperation and coexistence among all people.
When I heard the shocking news that the writer Salman Rushdie had been stabbed while participating in a conference, I immediately realised, without knowing further details about the attack or the assailant, that it is paramount as a Muslim to express absolute condemnation of this atrocity.
