51 votes in Senate is ONLY a Majority

Dan Quayle said:
So, therefore, you have 51 votes in the House and 51 votes in the Senate. That is not what our Founding Fathers had in mind. That is not the constitutional process.

One of the dumbest constitutional comments I've ever heard.

Oh come on, you missed the actual stupid of that comment.

(Emphasis mine)

I'll let that one stand on its own.
By the way, this was the first post in the WSJ article comments:
This is A S S U M I N G Reid can get 49 senators to put their lives on the line.

Don't think he'll do it

Remember when death threats weren't a classic part of our political process?

ummmm....the Democrats have 59 Senators.

For now. Which is why it won't be used to force anything through. Not only would that violate a precedent the Republicans themselves refused to cross when they had power (for fear of exactly this reverse situation) it would just pour even more fuel onto a mass defeat what, 8 months from now?

Live in fantasy worlds if you like, but this is the reality of the current state.

And as a larger political/philosophical issue, no, there is nothing respectable whatsoever in a 51% bare majority being able to do whatever it wants with legislation, no matter how massive or intrusive.

Touting 51% as a simple (and often transient) majority as the Holy Authorization Of Anything is touted by the power-hungry as a Good Thing because, go figure, without it, their power lessens.

I suspect some readers will go apoplectic reading that, meme defense mechanisms will engage, and they will regurgitate memes whose purpose is to downplay that and up-play "anything goes", in an attempt to defend their overmeme that seeks to spread itself via force, i.e. legislation. To take on the civilized propriety of discussion to ultimately mount a very physical forcible spread of ideas.

wrong. The Republican Congress used reconciliation to pass the 2001 tax cuts, the 2003 tax cuts, and the drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge, and other crap.

So right now the meme from the GOP and the right is that Senate should not pass legislation with only 51 votes.

Which is funny.

There was a joke headline after Scott Brown won in Massachusetts:
Scott Brown Wins Mass. Race, Giving GOP 41-59 Majority in the Senate

See here too

I've never seen such a timid, demoralized and pathetic majority as the democrats right now.

Republicans can count on almost every single republican to be with them on critical votes. Weak-kneed democrats cannot.

I'm talking about the 60 needed to end debate on a bill in the Senate, not an inter-house conference to reconcile differences between two bills.

Fact: The GOP Congress used reconciliation to pass several unpopular bills, in order to avoid a Dem filibuster.

Lock-step voting is weak in the the critical thinking department. Just because the party wants it doesn't mean it's automatically good. If more dems prefer to vote their conscience rather than what the party tells them to, that's a situation I actually prefer.

This wouldn't even be an issue if the GOP weren't filibustering even the most routine processes. They've doubled the record set by the Democrats and aren't stopping yet.
