Five Cities Make List for 2012 Host City Race

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) - New York and four European capitals - London, Madrid, Moscow and Paris - were selected as finalists Tuesday in the race to host the 2012 Olympics.

Four cities failed to make the cut: Havana; Istanbul, Turkey; Leipzig, Germany, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The field was trimmed by the International Olympic Committee executive board based on a report assessing the technical capabilities of the nine cities.

Is it really worth it to host these things? Think of all the money you have to dump into arenas and preparation. IS it all an ego thing??

Boston is hosting the Democrat convention. Because of the security the city, highway, and rail will be on serious lockdown. Everyone is dreading the convention cause its going to cause as big a hassle as a terror attack.


And how did Havana make the list in the first place???

The UK government is pretty keen. It enables them to undertake infrastructure projects (particularly transport and housing) which would otherwise lack a catalyst.

It's also a major shot in the arm for tourism, before, during and after. The part of London which is planning to host the Olympic sites is so run down I doubt fi they'd notice a terrorist attack.

Failing to support such a bid is, IMHO, like equating every penny spent to something you need rather than something you want. From time to time you have to dream as a nation in order to really live.

Of course I just want darts included in 2012 in the hope that the UK may win a medal
