I have a feeling this guy isn't going to be elected...

The Amarillo Globe News is reporting that Republican gubernatorial candidate Star Locke wants to scrap Texas' current property tax system. Instead, Locke would institute new taxes on abortion providers, soft drinks, and violent video games to fund the state's government.

Locke, a rancher and builder from Corpus Christi, favors a 50% tax on violent games, as well as a $10,000 tax per abortion and a 10% levy on sweetened soft drinks.

"One of my legislative proposals is to do away with property taxes statewide," Locke said. "I take the position that the Founding Fathers took: that the power to tax is the power to destroy. So our concept is that we need to tax things we don't want and you want to not tax things that you want to encourage."

How would Locke determine which games would be taxed?

The candidate told the Globe News he would create a 10-member panel to determine which games are violent. Taxes would then be levied against game publishers. The same board would also decide whether video game ads portrayed violence.

"Once it's reviewed, the tax would be levied swiftly."

Sorry. I'm new here and cant post links (?!) yet. I have a feeling that this guy dosn't know his American history too well.

Heeeeeellraiser!

I've never liked vice taxes.

If any of you Brits get shown the way to Amarillo, don't visit that dude.

Where I live, they recently raised the taxes on cigarattes by 60 cents a pack. That's on top of the taxes that were already there.

So what's the difference?

Interesting, he wants to create a panel of 10 powerful apointed politicians. At least he's progressive on bribery.

It must be good to be governor of a state where this represents the quality of your toughest opponent in the primary.

Texas government funded by abortions.

heh heh heh. yeah.

Wow... he's wearing a shirt made out of an American flag. Guess he dosn't mind sweating on his country's flag.
I made my courtesy call on the GOP Chairwoman Myrna McLeroy. After her grilling as to my motives, She seem to fancy my stars & stripes shirt. I told her I would try to find her size and departed on my way to Austin.

Sadly.........I have to report to her that I can NOT find her this shirt.
Awww... what a tragedy. :P

I saw the 60 minutes piece on another candidate who says that opposition to the ten commandments is just PC BS, and that he supports school prayer (by which I assume he means school sponsors prayer, since there's no controversy on school prayer).

And now Locke proposes three taxes, two of which are clearly unconstitutional. Are there any candidates that aren't religious nuts?

I think we should put a tax on fundies. There's a revenue pool that will never run dry.

That would be Kinky Friedman, of the Kinky Friedman and Texas Jewboys fame.

I really like Kinky and was surprised of his support of the 10 commandments and prayer in the school. He said in the interview that "kids should believe in something", and didn't endorse any particular religeon.

Locke said. "I take the position that the Founding Fathers took: that the power to tax is the power to destroy."

This is a world-class buffoon. The Founding Fathers said this in recognition and context of government mis-using taxes.

I heartily encourage him to see if the number of anti-abortion, anti-game people outnumbers the number of pro-abortion, pro-game people. Let's see, pro abortin is about half the population, even in red states, maybe more, and most of the people up through their early 40s love their video games...

Rhode Island taxes cigarettes $2.46 a pack. NJ comes in a close second at $2.40.

ETA: Look up your state here.

Good old Michigan is #3, with it's brand new $2.00 per pack tax. The governor is playing fast and loose to get the budget balanced, as required by the state constitution. She also rolled forward a big chunk of property taxes due date by 6 months, so the local governments would get money sooner, so the state could do a 1 time cutback on payouts to the local governments. Or 3-time, since I think the shift is graduated over the next three years. Makes for a lighter winter tax (already the light tax) but a much heavier summer one. **

Thanks, Jenny!

** Thus demonstrating how big government liberals (and I'm not conservative) just don't get it. When I have financial difficulties, I can't just say to the government, "I'm gonna pay you 6 months later to make my books work out OK." Nor can I say to the credit card company, "I think I'll lower the interest rate you're charging me from 27.99% to 7.99% so I don't have to pay as much because I have to pay the government first."

Don't forget that the U.S. federal government is run by Republicans who think absolutely nothing of balanced budgets. Personally, I prefer the tax-and-spend Democrats to the borrow-and-spend Republicans.
