I ask this, as i yawn away this morning spreading an epidemic of yawning across the office :D so, why do we yawn - and is it contagious?

Are there any animals you can think of that do not yawn ? Birds ? Fish ? Insects ? Platypus ? If so, why do they not yawn ?
