Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.
I've had a need for a "portable" video capture and editing machine a few times this year. Laptops are okay, but getting one with sufficient horsepower and screen size tends to get into the four-figure-plus range quickly. My two "regular" editing machines are custom-built (by me) AMD 64x2...
Just watched the shuttle launch on CNN.
That Tank-Cam is a REAL cool shot! Loved watching the boosters separate! I wonder if we'll see anything after the tank separates from the shuttle. Wouldn't mind a bit of re-entry action.
I'd buy a DVD of that!
Speaking of which, does anyone know of any...
On NPR this morning:
Sensational headline "Huge Asteroid Closes in on Earth."
(Silly explanation later that it won't come closer than the Moon, and that you'll need a good telescope to see it.)

That was the Columbia. The Challenger disaster was caused by an O-ring malfunction.
I'm sure it was a simple slip of the brain; we've equated shuttle disasters with the name Challenger for so long that it's totally understandable...
I have a nice Power Point show with good pictures of the Shuttle launch taken from an F15 flying around the site. Some good pics of the launch pads, and the Nasa building. If you want me to send it to you, let me know.
MIAMI (Reuters) - The space shuttle Discovery has begun its crawl to a launch pad, after a crack in insulating foam brieflydelayed the significant step in NASA's two-year quest to return the shuttle fleet to flight.
The roll-out, taking place at barely 1 mile per hour (1.6 kph) and expected to...
Why is NASA still screwing around with the shuttle? Why doesn't it bring back the Saturn V? I bet the latter launch vehicle would be safer, cheaper, and would carry a heavier payload. Is it a question of vested interests? Bureaucratic inertia? Really, in what way is the shuttle superior?
Any...
After I made reservations at the hotel I asked about a shuttle service from the airport to the Tuscany. I got the info and thought I would pass it on:
SHUTTLE NAME: Showtime Tours
PHONE: (702) 261-6100
WHERE: Gate 13 (Baggage Claim area)
COST: $4.25 one way or $7.50 round trip
TIMES: Shuttle...
Has anyone else noticed that in the video footage of the ground test where they shot a "foam" block at a simulated Shuttle wing, and the block makes a big hole, what happens to the block?
It doesn't disintegrate like the real deal up in the air. The real deal hit the wing and completely...
There is an interesting editorial in the new issue of Discover magazine. The magazine takes the position that the Space Shuttle fleet should be retired because of safety and cost issues. They also argue that the fleet is stifling the design and production of the next generation of reusable...
This is something I've been wondering but have been afraid to ask (I just thought I should KNOW this). Someone asked me this and I couldn't answer it entirely.
There is a minimum velocity to escape the Earth's atmosphere. Is there also a minimum re-entry speed? I was asked why the shuttle has...
I will be available for as often and as long as possible to pick up folks from the airport, and I plan to set aside all three days from my business to work for the JREF and the meeting.
However, I will have several things to do at the meeting, but will duck out to the airport as often as...
