Sorry, I'm a day late on this.
On 23FEB1954 the polio vaccine developed by Jonas Salk, began clinical testing at Arsenal Elementary School and the Watson Home for Children in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Five thousand children in those two schools were vaccinated against polio, which was the start...
I see the B&M Gates foundation have made a new video about the importance of vaccines and the drive to eradicate polio. Good one to share.

Vaccines save lives
So another miniepidemic starts on the back of a refusal to have vaccine. This time it seems to be the old "Polio vaccine is a Western conspiracy to sterilise muslims" reason rather than the usual antivax woo nonsense seen in the west.
I have an idea as to how we can get global vaccination rates...
When I thought I'd heard it all, a link was offered.

Never heard of this theory before, have you?
I'm engaged in a debate with a friend of mine. He believes that the polio epidemic declined on its own both in the United States and Europe before the introduction of either vaccine. I'm skeptical of this particular claim. Anyone know where to find some definitive statistics about polio rates?
An interesting debate was held in between Allopaths and Homeopaths. This debate was held in a workshop. Homeopathic doctors all around the country of Pakistan participated in one-day workshop cum seminar over poliomyelitis and hepatitis disease. Which was held in Holiday Inn Islamabad. This...
I don't have a link, but CBS news just announced that polio has broken out in Amish communities.
Such a pity that religious beliefs block public health issues.
Dave
Here is a news report that four children in Minnesota have come down with polio. The children are from Amish families so were not vaccinated for religious reasons.
Attention anti-vaxers: Polio vaccines work! Stop tormenting children by exposing them to a potentially crippling illness!
Lost Angeles mentioned this in another thread, but I thought it was worthy of it's own.
This article discusses the 50-year anniversary of the Salk Polio Vaccine being shown to be effective.
In the year proceeding Salk's confirmation, about 60,000 Americans developed polio and thousands died or...
WHO: Curses! Foiled again!
I think we all know what goes here so I wonder why I'm bothering to type it out.
This is what happens when uneducation combines with fundamentalism combines with conspiracy theories combines with "The U.S. Hates The World, and By 'The World', We Mean 'Muslims'"...
DAKAR, Senegal -- The World Health Organization will launch a massive immunization campaign Monday targeting 63 million children in about 10 African countries as a polio outbreak spreads from heavily Muslim northern Nigeria.
Islamic leaders in the heart of the Nigerian outbreak say they will...
Not really new news (this is from late oct, 2003), but pertinent to other recent discussions on the importance of vaccinations, and specifically to a thread in the politics forum (of all places) on flu and polio vaccines. Sadly, only 16% of children in some of these regions are being vaccinated...
From CDC:
"Since the 1988 World Health Assembly resolution to eradicate poliomyelitis, the number of countries in which polio is endemic has declined from 125 to seven. These countries are in three of the six World Health Organization (WHO) regions (i.e., African, Eastern Mediterranean, and...
