Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.
I postulate the only difference is expectation. If you have expectation of being hypnotized you might be more open to suggestion and if you have the expectation of just being relaxed you might be relaxed but not unusually open to suggestion.
Woman "recovers memory" in hypnosis that she killed a man who raped her -37 years ago
According to the Mail online .....

I just watched that new Derren Brown show and my credulity was tested when he just walked up behind his test subject, put his hands on his head and he fell into a state of unconsciousness or something like that.
Is this really possible and if so how is it done?

Great article in the latest eSkeptic:
http://www.skeptic.com/eskeptic/10-09-01/
The article gives explanations as to why the following are myths:
It sounds like a good book. Has anyone read it?
I was terribly interested in the limits of stage hypnotist's abilities from a young age. I believe I now know these limits (Kreskin isn't ruling the world is he?). Stage hypnotism is strictly about entertainment. Anything that may fall under "real" hypnotism during a performance is strictly...
Hypnotist plans record trancing(?)via Twitetr and Facebook!!

I'VE started this thread because I opposed Callahan's beliefs and yet I had to read what that ninny Kitakate wrote and I wasn't about to agree with him by sitting on my hands.
No one can manipulate anyone through the written word given any use of arbitrary capitalization and extra spaces...
Does hypnosis work or is it also psuedo-science. The Company I work for will pay for hypnosis to help employees to quit smoking. I have always wondered about hypnosis.
I've always been very sceptical about hypnosis, hence I was intrigued to see a study conducted by John Gruzelier and mentioned in New Scientist in 2004. As I'm not yet able to post urls, you'll have to find it for yourself with Google: search on 'gruzelier hypnosis' and it should come up third...
Considering hypnosis is just a persuasive kind of communication and hypnotherapy is using hypnosis in theurapetical setting, how important is someone's certification in praciticing and teaching hypnosis?
Personally, I don't find that hypnosis practice could do any real harm since they're...
Approximately one year ago I went to a group hypnosis session to quit smoking, and it worked very well. I even had two quick cigarettes before I went in, and have never smoked anything again.
I recently read an article in a local paper (sorry I can not seem to find a link to it directly)...
Some interesting details about this low quality show.
1) Browne, as Montel put it, "does aliens."
2) Jamie L. Feldman (Doctor of Clinical Hypnotherapy) is a "professor" at American Pacific University (an unaccredited online school).
3) His CV proudly promotes his been on Montel, but neglects...
Dear all.
Last night on UK TV was a programme called "The Bulls**t Detective". Alongside pieces about supermarket packaging, Feng Shui & a very funny set-up of three supposed "psychics" there was also a report on using hypnotherapy to effect genuine, permanent breast enlargement. I had posted...
Does anyone know anything about this hypo marketing thing: hypnomarketing.biz? They had a report on Tonight Tonight here, one of our prime time current affairs shows.
Looking for some thoughts. I teach HS Biology/Anatomy. I incorporate a variety of activities throughout my courses that I use as a means of including "scientific thinking" in addition to the basic content covered in each class.
One activitiy that I use in Anatomy deals with Alternative...
A few years ago I was at a County Fair with my Sister's family. And I saw a hypnosis act, and I watched it, knowing it was fake. I'm pretty sure everyone in the audience believed it was fake, and just silly, as do the people in the act. But I always wondered if I were the one to be picked...

Hi,
My girlfriend is seeing a hypnotist to assist her giving up smoking.
During the first session the hypnotist put a needle clean through the skin on the back of her hand without pain to prove she was 'under'. Now this sounds like a trick to me but I can't find any reference to it on the...

Looks like the first to jump on the bandwagon following the BBC's effort. I wonder how many drugs will be used this time?
V S Ramachandran suggested in Phantoms in the brain that we could test whether hypnosis is "real" or "playacting" by looking for suppression of Stroop interference under hypnosis.
His suggestion has been taken up, it seems:

Some myths never die. Today, Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet reports that bank clerks in Moldavia are urged not to look clients in the eye. It is suspected that a Russian bank robber is using hypnosis to make clerks give away cash in the amount of thousands. The robberies end with the alleged...
In the past I have found Randi's comments about hypnosis to be both inconsistent and inaccurate. The article in his encyclopedia is no different. I will also discuss Kreskin's comments about M.H. Erickson as they appear in How To Be (a fake) Kreskin. I think that people like Shermer (based on a...
I was using a different forum, and the topic in one thread was Derren Brown and the zombie show, much like here. It is amazing, however, what a different approach the believers are taking to the episode, from what I see here.
Anyway, one person made a comment that they hate all hypnotists...
Hello. I am attempting to convince a hypnotherapist to apply for the JREF challenge with the claim that hypnosis can increase breast size.
Is there a general sense of whether or not there could be a testable claim here?
Thanks.
In another thread the poster HypnoPsi says that hypnosis and hypnotherapy can do no harm.
What do you think about this area. Is it science or pseudoscience, and is it benign?
I have been chatting with a previously very depressed and social fobic girl who stopped taking her anti-depressants so she could be hypnotized by a healer. After her first visit at the healer she seems very happy and filled with confidence, which is a dramatic change. She still has two more...
I have a question regarding hypnosis. Is it woo-woo? Is there legitimate evidence confirming that it works? The reason I'm asking is for a few reasons.
First, I was taught about hypnosis in my psychology class, and from what I could tell, my professor didn't believe any of it. He's a very...
