Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.
One of those things one reads about. One of those things that promise a lot but are probably bull? Except not, in this case: not bull, fact. Calorie restriction, intentionally starving the body, does help you live longer.
An informative post* in another thread set me thinking that this is...
From the Bariatric Surgery - weight loss thread:
I found the complete BBC episode here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfna7nV7WaM
Basically the gist of the show was that the main point of intermittent fasting is to stay healthy longer, or age well. Although the host did lose weight, that...
Does anyone know more about this?

Afaik, the study has not been published yet, but I guess there's some kind of a preliminary paper out. I haven't found it yet, but the topic interests me.
Randi offers the challenge to the Indian breatharian, May 13, 2010:

Hardly an exciting change, but at least the challenge is alive and not in total hibernation.

This is absolutely impossible. First off, as precedent, Bobby sands only lasted ~ a month in the hunger strikes in the Maze.
Second, food and water are necessary for anybody to live.
Fasting for 40 days is mentioned in the bible and other religious texts such as the Zend Avesta where Zoroaster fasted in a cave for this length of time. Could someone actually go that long without food and still live?
Anyone know much about the Master Cleanse fasting thing? I know a bunch of people that have done it, but I'm skeptical--there doesn't seem to be much if any evidence (other than anecdotal) that it has any significant health benefits. I just checked out the Wikipedia entry for it, and the article...
I'm currently fasting for a few days. I knew there are few, if any, physical benefits of fasting but I wanted to know how dangerous it is. How long can someone fast before it starts to do damage to the body? (I'm talking about only drinking water)
I saw someplace where fasting is widely used as a medical treatment. This subject seems pretty fascinating.
Does anyone here have any knowledge on the subject to share?

If they're going to starve themselves to death, I wish they'd hurry up and get on with the job. Problem is, the US military keeps interfering by force-feeding them. Talibans are trying to kill themselves, for once, instead of Americans, and the most dangerous soldiers in the world are...
Okay, what's up with fasting and eliminating toxins from the body?
Here's what someone on another forum told me:
I asked how your body flushes out the toxins:
~~ Paul
BEIJING, March 30 (Xinhuanet) -- A Chinese doctor entered the 10th day of his planned 49-day fast in Southwest China. He was still safe and sound ¡ª but some people have raised questions.
Chen Jianmin, 50, entered a glass room in Bifengxia Valley, a mountain resort in Ya¡¯an City, Sichuan...
From the BBC News site:
Could this guy give David Blaine a run for his money? The story says he claims to have not eaten or drunk anything for several decades. Somehow, I have my doubts.
He was watched for 10 days, and the story says he didn't even drink water during that time - I find this...
In this Yahoo! Story:
Tenacious D goes on Hunger Strike
They will spend 45 days in a glass box in Times Square, outdoing Blaine by one day. In addition, they've got condition:
"Actor/singer/guitarist Black said the strike would end early one three conditions: if "The Complete Masterworks"...

Looks like ol' Blaine is getting attention from someone. I wonder what the point of his 44 day trick is. Where does he excrete his human waste to? He doesn't get to eat but I'm sure he has to drink.
Last week, my local AM radio station reported:
Until the I.R.S. answers or responds to his tax related question, a taxpayer will continue to fast on the steps outside I.R.S. headquarters. The man has fasted for 40 days waiting for an I.R.S. response.
Does anyone know the details of this...
