Brandon Woodruff was convicted in 2009 of murdering his parents in 2005. I was unfamiliar with this case until today. Arguing for the soundness of the conviction is the finding of a dagger (claimed to have his father's blood, but see below) in the parents previous home that might have been in...
Actually he died on the third but I only heard today. Probably most people here, outside the medical types and possibly those who've been pregnant, have never heard of him but his work saved, quite literally, milllions of lives.
Back in the '60s Pollack, along with Vincent Freda and John...
Out of idle curiosity, I was wondering about the properties of blood when used as ink.
Writing in blood sometimes pops up in the cliche of signing a deal with the devil in blood.
Apparently real-life practitioners of the occult sometimes use blood (mixed with sour salts to prevent it...
I'm doing research for a short story and I could use some information from people in the medical field or anyone else knowledgeable on this subject who would care to help out.
What I need is information regarding the range of reactions that people might experience if they were injected with a...
Hi Folks,
Much like Randi I enjoy the art of magic and debunking the paranormal. This evening I was doing the old "needle through the arm" magic trick. It reminded me that a fellow named Jack Schwartz did the same thing on TV with a sailor's needle. However he was not a performer but an author...
This is Awesome.
It still needs to be tested, but if it succeeds, it seems to me that this could count as the worlds first medical nanotechnology application. Would it be to "Sci-Fi" to think that these molecules could be a foundation that further nano-tech could be built on?
So I know that vitamin K exerts its physiological effect by serving as a cofactor for vitamin K-dependent carboxylase which carboxylates certain glutamate residues on the clotting factors, but recently someone told me that it could stanch bleeding of applied directly to a wound. Now, I think he...
This story caught my eye (hope it's not an April Fool!):
http://www.nature.com/news/2007/070326/full/070326-17.html
It's just entering clinical trials but I thought this is one of those really exciting "behind the scenes" advances that never seem to get the attention it should. (Instead...
This might sound like a stupid question, but something I was just wondering about.
Assume one has nearly unlimited finances (billionaire rich) and thus is limited only by technology and biology, and that this person does not want to die, despite the fact that many of their organs are failing...
I've been researching cord blood recently. It's kind of a neat idea, to keep some stem cells your child may need someday. A lot like having "spare parts" available if anything goes wrong while technology continues to innovate. But I am beginning to feel that the costs of it make it not all that...
I was noodling around on a silly website with quizzes on deep topics like "Who Is Your Movie Star Match?" and "Are You Marriage Material?" (Ellen Barkin and No, FWIW) when a link popped up to this quiz that determines whether "Holism" or "Allopathy" is the right medical philosophy for you. The...
Blood types, MMR Vaccine and disease associations ?
Does anyone on this forum know anything of certain blood groups being linked with diseases ?
A friend told me that her father has a very rare blood type (AB- ?) that is supposedly worth a fortune. She then asked her mum what type she was, her...
I like giving blood.
No, I don't. I hate giving blood, but I like feeling like I'm helping out. It's the Boy Scout in me. The reason I hate giving blood is because every time I do it I basically end up going into a mild form of shock.
I'm in fairly good physical condition and easily...
I am heartened that Randi is doing well and applaud any and all efforts to help him and others undergoing surgery, etc. I would dearly love to donate blood but the Red Cross will not take mine.
My problem is with the constant calls from the Red Cross for blood donations, constant alerts about...
Ok, not really cloned, but they did take a skin sample and use it to make kidney shunts for dialysis patients. I just read it in the local rag, but it's an AP story, if the byline is correct.
COOL!
A question for any haematologists around... a coworker was telling me about a book he's reading about how a) the different blood types evolved in the last 10,000 years or so and b) that certain foods - for example, grain - don't digest properly for people with an "older" blood type.
This feels...
Just finished the book. Possibly the best one in the series so far, with many of the characters (especiallly Voldemort) becoming fully fleshed. Yeah, I know who dies, but I won't reveal it in this first post.
The most important thing to me is the one bit that seems to be glossed over. It...
So says this article
The article says the common view is that jesus died of blood loss.
I thought the common view was he suffocated.
I thought the realistic view was he was never there.
here is the question.....
Is there any truth to the legend of "El Chupa Cabra" the blood sucking
alien from Mexico? if the answer is no might you know who made up the
legend?
...........................
I usually get abductions and nuts and bolts UFOs in the sky. I've heard of this chupa...
I read an article in the local newspaper today about preventing high blood pressure by lowering your salt intake. Now I am a veterinarian, and we get extensive education in animal physiology in veterinary school, or at least the one I attended. I have always heard that you could lower your...
Is there any connection between the two? Recently in Japan there's been one or two programs about this, showing things like infants in each of the group exhibiting "typical" behaviour, but we don't know how selective they were in picking these "typical" kids. They also showed other numbers that...
I was wondering what or if there is a risk of infection when giving a blood donation, or giving a blood sample at the doctor's office?
Do they reuse the needles?
Here is a link to a Wired article about how synthetic diamond semiconductors are the wave of the future.
Here is why not.
Sample:
And here is a more political article about just how dirty the diamond business is.

Conclusions:

Diamonds are pretty and we could have buckets...
Is it possible to tell the difference between oxy- and carboxy haemoglobin with the naked eye.
Methinks not.
Anybody know the absorption spectras and whether they are different enough to be discernable with the naked eye?
Is there a way to test one's blood and determine if meat has been consumed or not?'
I've been googling for a half hour, and I have been unable to find anything other than a fecal occult blood test.
Thanks for any assistance you may be able to to provide,
Jake
Suppose you have a human tissue sample, cadaver or part thereof, but no blood is present. Can the blood type of the deceased be determined? It has to be encoded in the DNA somehow, doesn't it?
