Here's a morbid query: I'm working on a sci-fi RPG setting where Earth is struck by an moderately sized asteroid. Not an "Dinosaur Killer," but one that causes a massive disruption of human civilization; economic collapse, war, famine, etc. Can anyone suggest how big such an asteroid should be...
Ok so I was having this debate with some guy about how possible it is that the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter might have been a planet at one point. We agreed that the total mass of the asteroid belt is barely enough to equal a planetoid half the size of the Moon, so then we thought...
Kramer,
Just an observation - she didn't claim that the town would be destroyed on that date, just that the date had signficance that would be explained after the town was destroyed.
There are two problems here:
1) The March 9 date has no specified content, just that the significance of it...
Is it possible that some asteriod could have hit the Earth's surface millions of years ago and then pieces of it could have landed on Mars or any other planet in the solar system?

I found this article to be somewhat thrilling. I'm not sure how I would've felt had the phone calls in question actually been placed and we all heard about it from the President. Afraid, perhaps.
An asteroid just missed us recently. It came within about 55,000 miles of earth. This is an astronomical drop in the bucket. A comrad I know also heard the story. He said what's REALLY scary is that he heard it's supposed to return in about 6 years.
It seems like 'the stars are lining up' for...
...are 909,000 to 1

How do you calculate odd like that? It seems awfully exact.
If an asteroid is ever discovered does anyone think that it could be blown up with antimatter? There's a lot of concern about near earth asteroids. Please reply.
About a year ago I read about an asteroid that is going to hit the earth in 800 years. If this does happen, do you think humans will have developed the technology to deflect or destroy the asteroid?
