When we moved to Xenfora some of the signature options didn't come over. In the old software signatures were limited by a character limit, on Xenfora there are more options and there is a character number and number of lines limit. I've set maximum number of lines to 4 and unlimited characters.

Waiting for the pod bay door to open.
Finally Windows is very stable and reliable. So they **** it up with forcing files onto one drive by default Notepad now opens a new tab for each file so instead of opening instantly for simple file editing, it now has to go to each tabs file on One Drive and load them all, so it hangs and is now slow to open. They stopped making the Curve keyboard because they are ****.

Thanks Microsoft. **** you.

I spotted Notepad doing that and couldn't work out WTF I had done to mess it up. What the hell are they playing at?

If I open a completely basic text file, that's what I want to do, just like everything has worked for the last several decades. I don't want to open multiple instances of the file because that's just confusing and not remotely helpful.

Actually, as you mentioned Onedrive and multiple instances, I need to have a more serious think about this. If I use Notepad to create a readme note for files on a USB stick, saving it directly and only to the stick, I sure as hell don't want unknown multiple copies saved on the local machine or Onedrive. That's a security/privacy nightmare I hadn't even imagined.

Oh, that's annoying.

If I open a locally stored txt file for the first time it opens normally. If I close Notepad and open it again it opens two instances in two tabs. If I keep closing Notepad and opening it, it adds another copy each time. WTF is that for?

If I close the document by closing the tab instead of closing Notepad it seems to work normally (just one copy when I open it again) but I don't know why so I don't trust it.

<edit> Okay, it's in the settings: "when Notepad starts" turn off "open content from the previous session".

FFS the whole thing about Notepad is it's so basic it doesn't need ******* settings.

It's working as it always has for me - apart from being able to have multiple files open in tabs rather than a new window. I've not adapted to having tabs yet - I always start a new instance of Notepad as I've always done if I want a second or more file open. Which I start by Windows key - n key - hit return.

Wonder why it's different for you two?

Windows key n key brings up notification.

Also Word. The default template is now completely different to what it was before.

Not Windows key + N at the same time. It's Windows key, which bring up the start menu, then I type n, followed by return.

Word - my other half is a Word expert I've just asked him and he said apart from the co-pilot tagline the only other change is the change to the new MS default font.

Win 11?

My very, very old laptop emitted a bad smell and stopped, so now I have new one with the new versions of once-familiar stuff and I'm shaking my fist at the clouds.

For many applications, especially MS office, the F12 key will bring out a save as menu that includes proper filepaths

Notepad++ is f6ree, featureful, and generally lacking in nonsense.

Yup

Yup

Notepad++ is way too bloated these days, it’s almost the antithesis of what it originally started as.

I tend to agree with you. I've tired it a couple of times but here are too many defaults, options and settings. All I want is auto-save and a bit of light formatting. :(

And now there are problems with Azure:

Microsoft outage impacting customers in Canada, around the world

Microsoft is reporting issues with its Azure network infrastructure affecting users connecting with services globally, according to the company's status page.

Downdetector.ca shows an increase in error reports at around 7:30 a.m., including issues with logins, the website and the Microsoft app. The tech company said the connectivity issues started at around 7:45 a.m.

Yeah I’m on Windows 11.

This is Notepad 11.2405.13.0

I also just turned off spellcheck and autocorrect. In Notepad! Someone at Microsoft needs to be told to leave the completely basic text editor the hell alone and go add their bloat to Word or Wordpad instead.

I'm going to report your cruelty to someone. That brought back flashes of my old Xenix support days!!! I'm going to have to go and lie down in a dark room once I can remember how to quit the damn thing, no I wanted the cursor there, nope don't cut that.. no don't paste the entire memory dump I just did ...... ahhhhrhhhhhh

It puts the editor in command mode or it gets the hose again.

Ha, with the TCAD software I use, the supplier, Synopsys, provides syntax files but for jedit. Now that's bloated and has a very eccentric UI and nomenclature.

My Sumatra PDF reader does the same thing, keeping a history of recent docs in tabs. I have come to rely on it to organize related research files. When Notepad starting doing the same, it did not bother me, as it's now a feature, not a bug.

Don't use OneDrive (not installed), so there is no slowdown in fetching recent files.

I found the settings, not under any of the menu options on the left where they usually are, but sitting on the right side of the menu bar. Everything has been disabled now.

I tried my best when upgrading to not use OneDrive but Microsoft outsmarted me.

MS: Turn off, disable, or uninstall OneDrive

I have an alias on gmail whose GDrive I set up on every computer I use. I put my Documents, Desktop and Pictures on it and have my same files available locally on all work and home machines. Works no matter what user I set up on Windows, or without a Windows account. Requires making sure OneDrive is gone first so that there are not two apps trying to own the same files, which works but can get messy.

For the adventurous, configuring special folders (ones with a Location tab in their explorer context menus, like Documents, Desktop and Pictures) is easy to arrange or fix using KnownFoldersBrowser. Recommend a Restore point before playing with it.
