Will tariffs make America great?

Doesn't matter what tariffs are put on US cars or not: they are unsuitable for driving in Europe.

Although Fords (designed appropriately for the roads) have long been popular over here and General Motors owns (owned?) Vauxhall/Opel so it's not like the US doesn't make money from the European car market. Of course Trump's sophomoric understanding of trade doesn't include services, management charges or remitted profit.

Modern versions of American performance cars are popular with the same people that buy cheap Bentley Continental GTs.
Shorts wearing, gym using Builders with tattoos on their legs.

Opel/Vauxhall are now owned by Stellantis

Thank you, I don't really take much notice of such things but I had a feeling my information was out of date.
Does GM still own ANY car manufacturing plants outside the US???? They closed down Holden (GMH) here in Australia (after gutting hundreds of millions in dollars out of it to feed GM in the US in 2017, and sold Opel and Vauxhall in the UK to PSA (later called Stellantis after they merged with the Fiat group of companies, who also own the Chrysler brand, both internationally and in the US) and I know the GM plants in Vietnam were sold off at the same time too (GMH exported many cars to them from Australia before GM closed the factories here as well as to the US...)

If you ever got a ride in the back of one of these cars- you were riding in an Aussie built V8 Holden Statesman... (the only thing 'Chevy' in the entire car was the badge on the grill and boot LOL)

If you owned a Pontiac G8- well again, thats an Aussie built LHD Holden Commodore....

If you own or owned practically any GMC/Buick SUV in the US, they are all made in China by the minority half GM owned (49%), half SAIC owned company (51%) before being exported there lol

They sure don't bring labor unions back, as your article notes. That's what made American manufacturing a desirable thing. You had good wages and safe working conditions because labor was powerful enough to negotiate for them. Not so these days. You're likely to get minimum wage, no benefits, and fond memories of OSHA. And that's if a company wants to spend 3 years and $2 billion to build a factory in America.

I work for GM and they have manufacturing in China, Korea, Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Uzbekistan along with Mexico and Canada.

In honour of Trampy's bigly deal:

Brave Sir Donald ran away.
("No!")
Bravely ran away away.
("I didn't!")
When danger reared it's ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
("I never!")
Yes, brave Sir Donald turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
("You're lying!")
Swiftly taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
Bravest of the braaaave, Sir Donald!

With apologies to the Monty Python crew.

Start a tariff war and then backdown to where he was already? yes, it's going really well.
I thought it was about stopping the drugs and bringing jobs and production to the USA?
Or is that old news?

Don't bring up last week's lies and excuses while we're trying to tell you this weeks lies and excuses. That's just rude.

Why did you think that? Surely not because of something Trump said?

not quite back where we were. it’s a little worse but not as bad as it was. which, of course, caused the stock market to go to the moon

Well this assumed you believed any of his excuses for doing so. I fear he really thought (using that word loosely) that tariffs would allow him to do away with other taxes.

So its been fun seeing the pretzel twists Trump supporters are making to try and claim this as a win. Many are just cut and pasting stuff they generate in ChatGPT, and it shows. Others suddenly are experts on tariff rates and reference articles about China tariffs on US goods....from 30 years ago. Others are trying to claim that China's increase in exports was proof they were in trouble (!). Its beyond twisted. I have to wonder if any Independent voters will be taken in by this nonsense or if they are just doing it to convince themselves.

I believe we're in "earnings season" right now, so news about last period's earnings are the flavor of the hour when it comes to investor mood. Give it another quarter or two.

they’re taking it as a big “whew it’s finally over” which it’s anything but

investors will blow up the market to make a quick buck if you let them.

And China will sell the USA their best, most modern machines? Thereby undercutting their own industries?

Thing is, as usual the Magats have it backwards manufacturing in China isn't cheaper because they have the machines, they have the machines because it's cheaper to manufacture in China.

It may be both, but either way the manufacturing jobs aren't coming back to the US. If more manufacturing is done in the US it's because it requires little or no labour. The days of thousands of people working in a plant in developed economies making widgets are long gone.
