It's my perception that bands aren't big these days, it's all about the singer-songwriter (Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, The Weeknd...).

The Killers, The War on Drugs, Future Islands or The National. If you count duos as groups, I'd throw The War and Treaty in as well.

Since I don't see those names I'm not voting.

I feel like this is a question from Only Connect, except it's US-based (as am I). I have never heard of any of these bands. Well maybe Glen Miller, when it was Glenn Miller. From the 40s... But I'm OK with that.

Ha! The results so far are about what I expected. And I was really looking for Valuable Input.

Sniff. I'll try asking again on TicTok.

:spongebob

Valuable Input, my college band name. We tried to hard to put math and music together, and sex lyrics, but we never made it beyond two shows. One of which resulted in fisticuffs. Guess who won.

The only one on that list that I've heard of (assuming Glen Miller isn't the disappeared band leader with a missing 'n') is Black Stone Cherry, who I know some of my friends have seen in the UK a couple of times. I would say I'm more aware of current music than most people my age (which might not be saying a great deal, of course).

Not that Glenn Miller the other Glen Miller. :p

Yep, its obviously taylor swift regardless of the fact that she's only a singer songwriter and not a band. She has GDP larger than most countries.

And nobody has mentioned

The Hump Socks
Breakfast Nook
My Dirty Little Secret
Holy War
George Thorogood and the Destroyers

I've heard of two of them: Mammoth WVH, which is a band with Eddie Van Halen's son, and Greta Van Fleet who made a splash with a very Led Zeppelin-sounding debut.

I have listened Taylor Swift, the rest haven't made much of a splash outside of the US yet. George thorogood must have been in the industry for 60 years now?
And I wouldn't rate Ms Swift as the most important, not sure what that takes.

Are these all actual bands? Or am I not getting a joke?

My thought too. Never heard of any of them, and even the phrase "most important band" begs the question: Are any of them truly "important"?

A little googling tells me they are probably real, if obscure, band names.

The first one on the list, Mammoth WVH, is fronted by Wolfgang Van Halen, son of Eddie Van Halen.

His father was very famous of course. I think everyone of my generation anyway knows Van Halen.

The second name on the list, Hannah Wicklund, is a real person and a musician. She must be pretty obscure though or I would have heard of her.

Going down the list, yeah. I guess they're all real, just not very famous.

From my narrow perspective, at this moment the most important band in America is The Funky Knuckles. That's cuz I just discovered them and they're insanely good, outrageously funky, and I can't get enough. I mean really, they're way better than anyone previously or subsequently mentioned.

Paging Dani. They're appearing in Madrid and Barcelona next week. The most important band in Spain?

I've heard of 7 of them, meaning I've listened to at least a few of their songs.

Johnny Hates Jazz, surely. Admittedly it's been a while since I checked up on them, but I'm certain they're still doing great things.

I can see I am not up on the latest band news.

The only band I recognized was Glenn Miller and I know that one solely because of the popular hit "In the Mood"

Such interesting speculation.

Yes. It is a parody thread. But, "Many a True Word is Said in Jest". And, to he best of my knowledge the bands are genuine. Except for two -- one of which is Glen(n) and the other is left as an exercise for the reader to discover.

The only name I recognize is Glen Miller….

I’d say Billy Strings. Strings, along with a few other cutting-edge bluegrass artists, are rapidly bringing that form back to prominence.

I see that the new Hunger Games film has Billy, Molly Tuttle, and Sierra Ferrel on the soundtrack, along with a few other rising “roots” artists.

I hafta admit that my favo(u)rite is not there. But there's not enough room to add ZZ Top to the poll. :(

Last thing I bought by an American band was Khruangbin and Vieux Farka Touré's "Ali", before that Earth's Primitive And Deadly.

Don't buy much by Merkinanian bands these days: all the good ones are gone.
