Saw this today on MSNBC and found it quite amazing.

Here's a similar article that discusses with the construction workers about building the tallest tower in America, and the emotion and pride that goes along with it.

http://rockcenter.msnbc.msn.com/_ne...eflect-on-building-nations-tallest-tower?lite

(watch the video on the page, it's pretty good)

Just thought I would share.

Mods: I know it has nothing to do with a CT, but thought it would be an interesting read.

Cheers!

Pretty interesting. At my previous job I used to drive up the NJ Turnpike every morning and see that thing progress.

I have really noticed how much taller it's getting the last few times I have flown over. It looks impressive from the air.

Amazing pictures. I can see a lot of progress since September, although even then it was a huge "beacon", that our teenagers used to find their way home to the hotel when they went out shopping on their own (we stayed litterally at GZ). In the evening its lit up with red, white and blue, and very visible. Sigh...to have an office at the top of that building... Although I dont think I´d ever be able to work with views like that. I love NY!

Thanks Trio... I haven't been down there in almost 2 years. The building I helped open is clearly seen in the picture with the construction worker sitting next to the cable reel. Damn I miss it!!

I'm with you minniemouse. I couldn't get much work done in a place like that.

For one: People watching!!! One of my FAVORITE things to do in big cities.

I too miss the big city.

Mind-boggling! I look forward to visiting it next spring when I'm in the Big Apple again.

I luv people watching too ;) But I kinda like being on the same level as the subjects of my observation lol. Unless one has a Hubble telescope :D
The best time to watch people is in the spring; amazing how many interesting characters that crawls out from under their stones in spring....! Hehehehehe

And on a more serious note:

I don't want to denigrate the Twin Towers... but you have to admit, One World Trade is a hell of a lot prettier than those two buildings were.

I couldn't agree more. In fact, many people didn't like the design of the original towers, as they weren't "pretty". But, people grew to like them, then love them.

But yeah, the new tower looks awesome!

DAMMIT MAN!!! You better go talk to the cat.....you're gonna be in SERIOUS trouble! :D

Aww, hell, last time NWO-K called me to his office, I woke up in Alaska wearing earphones and pointing a dish mic in the general direction of Siberia. Didn't gather any intelligence; just got a whole lotta conversations about vodka followed by hours of snoring. :boggled:

Yep, I remember reading complaints about the towers looking about as pretty as a couple of storage boxes. But they became so iconic of the NYC skyline that they became accepted. And I think that's the reason for most of the affection: It was less about the towers themselves and more about how they just defined the view.

Of course, you can correct me on that if I'm wrong. Seeing as how you were there for some time. But that's the impression I got.

San Francisco was the same about the Transamerica Pyramid. At first a lot of people really hated it and tried to prevent it from being built but now it's pretty much a landmark.

Ever had to sweep the sun off the sidewalk?

You're absolutely correct. They might have been ugly, but dammit, they were OUR ugly towers.

Thanks for the links.

Yes, One World Trade Center is a beautiful building, which - in my opinion - captures the spirit of the Twin Towers.

Well your opinion is wrong.
It's not the World Trade Tower.
It's the Please don't hit us with our own planes again tower.

It wasn't enough they made the so called victim memorial a hole in the ground.
It took 11 years to throw that steel and glass tribute to Americas fear and complete lack of self esteem up.

There was only one possible choice.
Build it back the way it was just better and stronger using modern day technology.
Anything less is pissing on the grave sites of all who died that day!

No meetings needed to be held. No committees needed to convene.

The entire first floors of both new twin towers should have been the memorial for the victims and the heroes of that tragic day.

That shining crap the nation took at ground zero is an insult to the victims, the heroes, the family's of and the nation as a whole.

There is no way we as citizens of this great nation should stand for it.
Not for one minute!

Why not erect a statue of the terrorist? It could be a kneeling raghead looking up toward Allah holding the Quran in one hand and a bloody box cutter in the other.
I'll bet your eyes are swelling with tears just picturing that.:a2:

You start of saying that my opinion is wrong and then continue by pushing your own opinion. Which is no more true than my opinion.

This, however, *is* wrong, using the term "raghead" and throwing in Allah and the Quran. What do these directly have to do with 9/11?

Well your opinion is wrong.

Well, it's an opinion. I happen to agree with it, as do many other people. So.....

It's not the World Trade Tower.
It's the Please don't hit us with our own planes again tower.

Wow.

It wasn't enough they made the so called victim memorial a hole in the ground.

That is just one part of the whole thing. Did you forget about this part?

Damn near the entire site of the previous WTC is a memorial.

It took 11 years to throw that steel and glass tribute to Americas fear and complete lack of self esteem up.

Well, partially because of the fact that the entire site was a cluster cluck for many years. But, apparently your ignorance of the entire site memorial has come to bite you. Hard.

There was only one possible choice.
Build it back the way it was just better and stronger using modern day technology.

Which is exactly what they did.

Anything less is pissing on the grave sites of all who died that day!

Well, considering I have spoken to literally dozens of different victims families, every single one of them love the design. So......

No meetings needed to be held. No committees needed to convene.

The entire first floors of both new twin towers should have been the memorial for the victims and the heroes of that tragic day.

Well, have you see the design of the new 1WTC lobby?

That shining crap the nation took at ground zero is an insult to the victims, the heroes, the family's of and the nation as a whole.

I, and many others, disagree.

There is no way we as citizens of this great nation should stand for it.
Not for one minute!

Because that is just an asinine idea.

BTW I bet the designers of the new WTC tower took the NIST recommendations for safer skyscrapers to heart big time. Anyone have details on this?

And I really hope the better design never gets tested.

<snipped for brevity>

There's a lot of criticism over the design because many believe the new Freedom Tower sacrifices heavily on design aesthetic to over engineer and prevent another disaster. The first few stories of the tower's design is essentially a reinforced concrete wall. Obviously engineered to undercut bomb attacks like the one in 1993 but still such that people will inevitably hate the aesthetic feel; it is after all quite brutallistic in some ways.

I'm not sure where the idea comes in that the memorial is under done considering that the entire site is used as you say.

You can read about some of the different systems here.

http://www.renewnyc.com/content/pdfs/freedom_tower_fact_sheet.pdf

One major improvement: Thick, concrete protected cores surrounding the stairwells. Egress was a major problem on 9/11. So not only did they make the stairwells stronger, they made them wider.

"The walls will be 3 feet thick reinforced concrete walls for all stairwells, elevator shafts, risers, and sprinkler systems and emergency staircases were made to be “extremely wide” so that as many people as possible could exit the building as safely as possible. There will be a dedicated set of stairwells exclusively for firefighters and the ventilation system will be equipped with biological and chemical filters."

I like the bolded part.

I was just reading about the reinforced lobby walls. While I might agree, depending on the final design that it's not very aesthetic, but I haven't seen it.

But, for the most part, the rant by Brattus is based on (IMO) ignorance.

ESPECIALLY about the memorial.

It's the Please don't hit us with our own planes again tower.

You don't actually think that's possible anymore, do you?

As for the rest of your little tirade, pfft... someone wronged you at some point obviously.

Just saying that I don't think everything he said about the tower's design is without context; but the memorial design is another issue altogether. Isn't Zuccoti Park part of that memorial?

Its absolutely still possible. Not perhaps likely but it would be very foolish to say its impossible. All it would take is one insane pilot to be in command of a flight into or out of any of the areas airports. It wouldn't even have to be a passenger jet

Agreed. Whilst I initially thought that replacing them would make a statement, I like what they are doing even better. I plan a visit when all the new building work is finished.

There's no way to win when it comes to the new buildings IMO. I think they're awesome, but that's just me. As we've learned with everything else related to 9/11, you can't make everyone happy. There will be gripes and groans about everything.

Couple months ago was doing job for company in World Finance Center 2 across the street

Was amazed by the building

The new WTC building is beautiful, but the memorial is ugly and depressing. It goes down, down, down and evokes the terrible memories of the people falling and the building debris falling.

I'm with you on this. Right after the attacks happened, I thought the best possible response, even better than military action, would have been to create the most ambitions construction project in history and have the towers rebuilt, exactly as before, within a year of the attacks. That would have been the most effective "screw you" to the terrorists imaginable. It would have shown our true power and resilience as a nation.

Unfortunately, we chose to play right into the terrorists' hands. Oh, well.

If that's what you got from it then I'd say that the people who designed and built it did a pretty good job. There are still over 1,000 people missing from that day, just gone, ground up into bits so small that they couldn't find enough to identify them, and that's their graveyard.

Oh, don't get me started on graveyards. Why are they always so somber? Maybe if they had parties there, that would liven the place up.

I just figured I'd add this:
http://news.yahoo.com/asterisk-wtc-back-top-nyc-145951265.html

One World Trade Center, the giant monolith being built to replace the twin towers destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks, will lay claim to the title of New York City's tallest skyscraper on Monday. Workers will erect steel columns that will make its unfinished skeleton a little over 1,250 feet high, just enough to peak over the roof of the observation deck on the Empire State Building.
The milestone is a preliminary one. Workers are still adding floors to the so-called "Freedom Tower" and it isn't expected to reach its full height for at least another year, at which point it is likely to be declared the tallest building in the U.S., and third tallest in the world.
Those bragging rights, though, will carry an asterisk.

I thought that they had done with the name "Freedom Tower"?

Chris they did, did you miss the Rising Series that aired the week of the 10th anniversary? Produced by Steven Spielberg. Gimme a sec lemme see if I can find it on youtube...it was Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero - Reclaiming the Skyline part 1 and 2 where they show how WTC 1 is being constructed with reinforced concrete stairwells that are much wider with better accesses for emergency personel.
