U.S. Weather Modification in the 20th Century

Its interesting what attempts were made at weather modification from 1950 to 1980.

They tried hail suppresion. Farmers used dispersion from land and air for cloud seeding

In the 1988 report it states at one point the FAA need to address the added air traffic from cloud seeding.

It makes me curious what weather modifications are done today.

They still research it, and some states like California still maintain limited cloud seeding operations. There has been a long running focus on numbing out hurricanes, but the data is so inconclusive that I guess they are still hesitating. The last thing they'd want is to try to alter a hurricane and it heads straight into DC or NYC or something as a result.

"Table 3 shows that the primary purpose cited in conducting a weather modification activity was to increase precipitation. The secondary most often purpose cited was to increase snowpack, another method of increasing water resource.​

Availability of water is critical to several industries, such as agriculture, hydroelectric power, and recreation. Weather modification is also motivated by a desireto mitigate hail damage to agricultural crops, to disperse fog from airports and breakup pollutant trapping valley fogs, and to increase snowpack for winter recreational resorts."​

H.R.5519 - Atmospheric Climate Intervention Research Act
Introduced 2019. 2020 considered. Nothing since 2020


One law passed in the mid 1970s. Mostly for research.

In the 50s they passed a few

S.285 - An Act to create a committee to study and evaluate public and private experiments in weather modification

An Act to amend the National Science Foundation Act of 1950, to provide for a program of study, research, and evaluation in the field of weather modification

The weather is probably hard to experiment with. Anything going wrong could have apocalyptic consequences, and everyone would be sticking their hands out to Uncle Sam if there was a whisper that it was artificially induced.

Eta: kind of why psychology/psychiatry doesn't make huge leaps and bounds. Not a lot of margin for error.

These devices are very effective at making clouds do things you never noticed they did when you weren't pointing a bunch of tubes at them and watching them intently.
