Ed The Fascism Checklist, Trump 2025

Did he just declare martial law?

Sec. 4. Using National Security Assets for Law and Order. (a) Within 90 days of the date of this order, the Attorney General and the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the Secretary of Homeland Security and the heads of agencies as appropriate, shall increase the provision of excess military and national security assets in local jurisdictions to assist State and local law enforcement.
(b) Within 90 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of Defense, in coordination with the Attorney General, shall determine how military and national security assets, training, non-lethal capabilities, and personnel can most effectively be utilized to prevent crime.

Hmm. The "Trump isn't fascist" apologists seem very quiet these days.
They're also really, really quiet when asked to weigh in on the fascists' actions and policies. But that's how it goes when you're supporting the indefensible, I guess. Once the Party at the level where they're deporting citizens, threatening to arrest judges, and all the other horrors we discuss here, it becomes really, really hard to voice your support without having to say the quiet part out loud.

With the no habeas corpus, no more 12 hours for detainees to pleade thair case? Straight to El Salvador? Will the Clintons and the Obamas get to stay at the same camp at least? They could play bridge.

Important to keep remembering. Of course we know they only intend to use that power against them. Not us. Not so far. But when the right is removed, it's gone for us all. When the right of all is removed for them, the rest are left not with a right but a privilege granted by the whim of their leaders.

I'm reminded of the price we sometimes pay for what seems at first to be reasonable, as we count down to the 40th anniversary of the Philadelphia "Move" debacle, in which an attempt to dislodge militants ended up with a neighborhood firebombed and the murder of 11 people including 5 children. It was a mistake, determined after the fact to have been illegal, but the dead did not come back to life. When we talk about habeas corpus here we should remember that this is about an administration that makes mistakes on purpose and revels in their irreversibility.

There's no "mistakes" with the Trump admin. This is coldly and calculatedly planned.

I was in Philadelphia at the time of that debacle, about 10 miles away, watching it unfold on the local news.

We’re Experts in Fascism. We’re Leaving the U.S. | NYT Opinion (NYT on YouTube, May 18, 2025 - 6:53 min.)
Legal residents of the United States sent to foreign prisons without due process. Students detained after voicing their opinions. Federal judges threatened with impeachment for ruling against the administration’s priorities.
In this Opinion video, Marci Shore, Timothy Snyder and Jason Stanley, all professors at Yale and experts in authoritarianism, explain why America is especially vulnerable to a democratic backsliding — and why they are leaving the United States to take up positions at the University of Toronto.
I remember those references to checks and balances on this forum just a few months ago:
1.25--> My colleagues and friends, they were walking around and saying, "We have checks and balances. So let’s inhale, Checks and balances, exhale, Checks and balances."
And I thought, My God, we’re like people on the Titanic saying, 'Our ship can’t sink. We’ve got the best ship. We’ve got the strongest ship. We’ve got the biggest ship. Our ship can’t sink.'
And what you know as a historian is that there is no such thing as a ship that can’t sink.

Big Donald Is Watching You: Sliding into autocracy under Trump 2.0 (MSNBC on YouTube, May 18, 2025 - 7:08 min.)
A giant banner featuring Donald Trump’s photo just went up at the front of the Department of Agriculture. A military parade is being planned for his birthday, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. His cabinet members shower him with praise every time they have a meeting. These are not the kinds of things that normally happen in the United States. It’s more in line with how autocratic leaders display their power in oppressive nations like North Korea and Iran to constantly remind people who’s in charge. But now that it’s starting to happen here, we have to acknowledge it and recognize it as a sign that America is sliding into autocracy.
But don't fall for this crap:
6:31--> If he can dress up the White House like a palace for a king, then why can't he accept a $400 million plane from a foreign government? If he can put up a giant poster of himself, then why not put up a giant poster of himself? Then why not put up more until Trump becomes omnipresent? Until you're reminded everywhere you go, that old Big Donald is watching you?
In a democracy, we don't worship kings or rulers or princes or presidents!
Yes, we do! And we always did! The USA more so than most Western countries.
It's the reason why it's so easy for democracies to 'slide into' fascism!

The Republicans always push towards authoritarianism and give presidents more and more power, but only if they are Republican. Unfortunately, Democrats have not pulled that power back when it is a Democrat in power. It's a ratcheting effect that's happened over decades.

I can only hope that Democrats regain power and use their power to restrict the executive powers. I have my doubt that they'll resrict the executive powers if a Democrat is in the oval office, though.

I was cleaning my mother's house (she's in a home since last month), and I found some papers from one of my grandmother who lived in Paris during WWII… looks like she hid some people in their house. Made me think about the return of fascism we're seeing and reminded me of the Partisan song, made me cry …

(Leonard Cohen version in English and French)

Les Allemands étaient chez moi
On m'a dit "Résigne-toi"
Mais je n'ai pas pu
Et j'ai repris mon arme

Personne ne m'a demandé
D'où je viens et où je vais
Vous qui le savez
Effacez mon passage

J'ai changé cent fois de nom
J'ai perdu femme et enfants
Mais j'ai tant d'amis
Et j'ai la France entière

Un vieil homme dans un grenier
Pour la nuit nous a cachés
Les Allemands l'ont pris
Il est mort sans surprise

Hier encore, nous étions trois
Il ne reste plus que moi
Et je tourne en rond
Dans la prison des frontières

Le vent souffle sur les tombes
La liberté reviendra
On nous oubliera
Nous rentrerons dans l'ombre

I wonder how many people read about that incident and viewed it as an example to be followed for future acts of protest. Like when they called in actual fighter jets to bomb a rioting black neighbourhood in Fritz the Cat.

Thank her for me.

Have you considered that this was the most recent Democrat in the White House:
'You Cannot In Fact Do Both': Biden Slammed for Bragging About Oil Production (Common Dreams, Sep 3, 2024)
"No you cannot 'do both.' That would be like sending 50,000 tons of lethal weapons to a brutal, murderous regime and then telling them you 'want a cease-fire,'" said Climate Defiance.
Climate campaigners this week rebuked recent claims by U.S. President Joe Biden—and Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee—that the United States can simultaneously increase fossil fuel production and transition to a clean energy future.
On Saturday, Biden boasted on social media that "on my watch, we've responsibly increased our oil production to meet our immediate needs—without delaying or deferring our transition to clean energy."
"We're America," the president added. "We can do both."
And all it took to convince environmentalists that he meant well was to sign some treaty about what the U.S. would do sometime in the future.
USA and the Paris Agreement (Wikipedia)
On January 20, 2025, shortly after his second inauguration, President Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the United States from the agreement for a second time.
Have you considered that the Democrat most recently running for the office toned down all talk about environmental issues, universal health care etc.?

How can you still hope that Democrats will suddenly start doing things differently the next time? Why would they do that?
They may not be outright fascists like the current version of the GOP, but they sure as hell are fascism enablers.

I don’t think it is fascism – or fascism enabling – to scale down environmental politics. It may be unfortunate, or even catastrophic, but it is only a coincidence that fascists have the same policy.

This is kind of why I hate this whole thread. Enviromental policy and politics are basically orthogonal to fascism. There's no reason why a fascist wouldn't have authoritarian policy aimed at protecting the environment or authoritarian policies intended to continue pumping out pollutants.

Deleted section about legally question things regarding my opinion of Trump. I don't like him.

But that is what drives me nuts about the Trump is a fascist thing. He's not, he's an authoritarian for sure but there is no ideology beyond that, he just wants people to do what he tells them with no limits. The realitly that folks on the left have said everyone to the right of them is a fascist for 70 years, just makes the fascist thing useless. It is the equivalent of some righty calling someone a commie or neo marxist, just makes folks roll their eyes.

And, he's not a fascist, he's not smart enough to be a fascist. He listens to fascist but then he also listens to morons.

All that being said, he is the worst person that has ever held the office.

The other thing is that my unwillingness to call him a fascist and my willingness to say anyone that does is...well fairly ignorant somehow means i'm a magachud. It's all frustrating.

So, it sending the military in against opponents of the regime trying to stop razzia's not fascism either?

While working on implementing a full police control state with things like palantir?

Donald says it's a Rebellion by the far left and paid rioters and Hegseth say's it's foreign criminal cartels and terrorists.

It's an emergency and they can send in the Marines.

I didn't have the troops on the streets until at least next year, they are ahead of schedule.

Oh so the US Marines are now part of Donny's personal police force? Wonder how the jarheads feel being turned into members of the Sicherheitsdienst. Semper Fidelis, but to what exactly.

Rumour has it that he's just issued an arrest warrant for the dangerous Mexican spy, Cassian Andor.
The Rebel Alliance was inspired by the Viet Cong, who were pretty far to the left, so I guess that checks out. Watch for X-Wings --some of their pilots used to bullseye womp rats, so they'd probably be able to land a hit on Drumpf, who's not much smaller than two meters in width.
