Truly one of the funniest things I've ever seen on Saturday Night Live. It had me laughing until I retched. Or maybe it was retching until I laughed:

Of course that wasn't the only funny thing that happened yesterday. The million sore loser march was pretty funny too.

I think you (and Trump) have the wrong way of looking at a representative democracy. You seem to confuse it with a game.

The slightly more than half of the voters who opposed Trump are still citizens by all criteria, and as such have a completely legitimate right to have their views considered too. This would be true if the opposition was only 10% of the vote. Democracies are not winner take all. Indeed they can't function that way- the end result of winner take all is radical swings in government every few years and ultimately the tearing apart of the country. Of course the views of the majority should have more influence than those of the minority. But compromise must be the central driving force in government: all the viewpoints have to be considered and attempts made to try to reach a compromise that works and that (ideally) makes both sides reasonably happy (although presumably makes the majority more happy than the political minority). That is how one successfully runs a democracy rather than a dictatorship.

There are 300 million people in the USA- can we afford to ignore and belittle ("sore loser"??? Is "cry baby" next?)) half or more of them because of a single election?

But in recognition of your viewpoint I promise over the next 4 years to unify behind and to support Trump at least as strongly as the Republicans did Obama. Fair enough?

Further- you may enjoy trying to rattle the cage of liberals here, but I suspect that the idea of Trump as President is quite troublesome for you too.

It's part of the way the Rightwing think these days. If you aren't with them then you are against them, and as long as you are against them they will attack you. A victory isn't complete until no one dares oppose them.

I don't get it. Was that really SNL? Looks like something from the sixties. If so I'm glad I haven't watched it in over 20 years!

I can't understand what they are saying so I don't know if this is a joke or what or whom...?

CNN has been featuring SNL skits in their headlines every week for months as if they are relevant, usually a Baldwin doing a Trump impersonation. Never seen it. Is he a member of the cast now? I thought SNL was for up and comers, not old guys.

I don't understand the OP or the responses. Why am I responding? I'm in a weird mood I guess.

Seriously, this sore-winner game is getting really tiring.

Hey guess what! SNL has made fun of every President and almost every Presidential candidate since they started, why does Trump get a pass from this?

As for the protests, you seem very determined to tell us they don't bother you at all and that the people at them are sore-losers. Very determined to tell us. Constantly.

what would that look like? Calling the elected president illegitimate? Holding massive protests against him before he's hardly done anything? Complaining about foreign interference while liaising with foreign rallies against your president?

Do you find my view wrong, or do you just want to say that "my" side does it too?

In any case I am saying that citizens who oppose Trump have every right to hold massive protests against him and to advance their own agenda. Same as those who opposed Obama. My point is how the government needs to at least try hard to integrate the viewpoints of all citizens as best as possible- the opposite of demanding all citizens get behind whatever the President says. The latter is what a dictatorship demands. Which oddly is exactly what Trump has demanded.

As to calling the President illegitimate or relying on foreign intervention: do you really want to go there?

Did you even watch the video I linked? It really doesn't seem like you did. For that matter, it doesn't seem like anybody here has. The contributions to the thread consist of mostly non sequiturs. My point is that SNL is supposed to be a comedy show, but it managed only to be unintentionally funny by doing an obsequious tribute to our outgoing President. The show is Democratic propaganda masquerading as comedy. Sort of like The Daily Show, or Stephen Colbert's abomination.

Are you completely sure that you're capable of detecting whether something is funny?

I guess that explains why SNL rarely elicits more than a smile from me and usually makes me cringe. I think the last good thing it did was "dick-in-a-box." Lorne Michaels was probably on vacation that week.

Show me something you've written that you think is funny, and let's compare it to something I've written that I think is funny.

ETA: I just remembered that all of my best stuff is either in AAH or FMF, and I can't access either for another week. I can go with my second rate stuff though.

It is something from the 60s. The song is To Sir With Love, from the film of the same name. If you're familiar with the movie, it's clear what is being said.

Yes. And thanks for taking a video of your TV screen instead of uploading a proper hi-res version.

Get used to it for the next four years, my friend. I think they're going large this time with coordinated marches, taking stands against the President, congratulating each other for being brave by taking stands against the President, and bravely changing their avatars on Facebook.
Up Next: Lady Gaga is doing the Superbowl halftime show, and I'll bet you dollars to donuts she'll do something brave. There will probably be a pussy hat or two involved.

Sunmaster has more than once indicated that he has a great sense of humor. It is a very serious issue for him.

It is a bit odd that SNL paid such a nice tribute to Obama when his dignified and thoughtful actions as President made it more difficult for them to satirize him. Whereas Trump's election assures them of endless possible skits for 4 more years ( if he, and the USA last that long). SNL should be grateful for the change!

I don't actually remember saying I was funnier than you. I certainly don't have any idea how your challenge is connected to anything in this thread. However, since you asked, here's a recap I wrote for the last episode of Mr. T. By following links on the site (AgonyBooth.Com). you can see a few other articles of mine.

It's a very strange bit, I'll agree. "Retching", though? Perhaps that has more to do with your bromance with Obama? I have the advantage of being able to watch SNL on delay on the computer. I just zoom past the boring parts (most of the show).

But you know,.... they hate you, right? You don't have to watch. Maybe you and Teh Donald could share a Taco Bowl (he has the best Taco Bowls, the best) in the White House kitchen while it's on instead of getting your blood pressure up.

(The only humor, and I use the term loosely, is the "we got you this mug" ending. The bit is flat and stupid, other than that. I hadn't heard of it before this thread, but I now note that it's getting a lot of positive web coverage. Sad.)

I pity the fool. Looks promising, but I'll have to read it later, since I'm getting on a plane early tomorrow.

I may as well brag about some of my work. Here's me interviewing Donald Trump as a gag.

By the bye, SM14. Did you actually vote for Trump? IIRC, there was a bet which you unfortunately lost and so were forced to vote for Hillary? Or did you?

The last time Lorne Michaels showed good comedic judgement was when he signed the Kids in the Hall. He's been coasting ever since. It's pure luck that SNL has enough good years to carry him. Kudos to the cast and the writers.

I don't think it was unintentional at all.

It was meant to be funny, and almost exactly in the way you took it.

ETA: But I will also agree with FMW. The bit was flat and stupid. So, it was meant to be funny, but it mostly failed. It failed badly enough that you didn't even think it was meant to be funny.

I don't think it was meant to be funny. I don't think the Hillary Clinton singing Leonard Cohen thing from November was, either. Neither was the Love is a Dream thing they replayed when Jan Hooks died.

SNL has always had the odd moment of sincerity or seriousness. Sometimes, there is no bit.

Well, you lied about the video being of you. I assume you'll lie about reading my work. You offered me a challenge, I accepted, I put up my writing, you failed to do what you promised. It's all rather odd. In any case, you lose.

It would have been funnier if Obama was wearing a pussy hat -- but then, that would just be redundant.

I agree that the Leonard Cohen bit was not meant to be funny, although I also think the right wing overreacted, and didn't quite understand that bit, either.

I mean, sunmaster gave away the game within the first post. The reason he objects isn't really "It's a comedy show! There's no place for non-comedy!", but that someone would express genuine affection and appreciation for the man at a moment when it seems understandable to do so. This isn't so much an overreaction as calculated malevolence. ABBAB.

Oh, yeah, I lied. What is it with liberals and malicious attacks? My so-called lie was a joke, one that had a point, which was "how the hell do I know that Loss Leader is the guy who wrote the stuff you linked to?" From my point of view, you're anonymous. I can only accept that the posts here under your name were written by you.

Here's a lie: Three dyslexic men walked into a bra.

Never happened. But it's still worth writing.

As for some of my funny stuff, take a look at the FMF thread I started on Godwin's Law. I was having a lot of fun with that one.

Also, I thought up a good line when Black Lives Matters people were interrupting people's brunches at restaurants in Manhattan. I never got a chance to use it, however. I thought the BLM motto should have been "No justice, no quiche!"

Gave away the game? I thought I was being quite open about the game. It's that the liberal media, which includes most of the entertainment industry, saw Obama as some sort of messiah. I've never been terribly fond of religion, but progressives tend to substitute for it my worshiping certain politicians and policies. Sad.

I completely disagree that it was an attempt to be funny. I have no doubt in fact that it was 100% heartfelt and sincere. Which is both sad and funny in a way.

Considering we went from Obama's "Yes, we can" to Trump's "Only I can", I'd say you got your messiah's reversed.

No supporter I know is ever going to serenade Trump with a rendition of "To Sir With Love." Well, not unless Trump pays big bucks for it. I think I would charge less to pee on his bed.

Well, here's a post of mine from 2013:

Quote me as Jordon Davis

Friend me as well.

Here's one from 2011:

I actually had a big problem with a manufacturer of a CPAP machine. It worked so well that I wrote them a letter. So far, so good. Then the manufacturer printed an excerpt in its marketing materials and identified me as "Jordon Davis, Valley Cottage."

My name being less than ubiquitous and my info being easily found in the white pages, I started getting actual phone calls from people who wanted to know if the thing worked.

I still do, sometimes.

If you click on my handle on the left and go to my homepage you find my old blog in which I'm identified as Jordon Davis.

If you go to the JREFUGEES (JREF Forum Refugees) on Facebook, you'll find Jordon Davis.

If you search for Jordon Davis on Facebook, you'll find a message specifically to you that I just wrote on my wall.

If you search @lossleader on Twitter, you will find not only a message I just wrote to you, but my profile identifies me as Jordon Davis. It also identifies me as having joined in 2009.

Here you'll find an old post of mine about Buffy the Vampire Slayer written under the name Loss Leader, but asking to be quoted as "Jordon Davis."

Here's a picture of my son, Harry that I uploaded in 2014.

[IMGw=200]http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=681&pictureid=9368[/IMGw]

You'll find more pictures of Harry (but not this one) on my Facebook page as Jordon Davis. I'm also pretty sure he's my Twitter pic.

If you contact an Admin on this board, I give them permission to reveal my real name to you.

That's how you know who I am. Your "joke" wasn't funny. Your writing isn't funny. You lied. I didn't.

No, you were disingenuously pretending to object to the fact that SNL did something that wasn't funny.

Yes, your actual concern is all the boring stuff you just volunteered about the liberal media and Obama the messiah and so on. The standard right-wing practice of going apoplectic over something barely worth noting.

Fun stuff. But, seriously, what's your real name?

Here's a picture of my driver's license that I just took:

You'll note that my signature on the note is the same as the signature on my license. You'll also note the odd spelling of my first name, which is consistent throughout all of the information I've just given you.

... the liberal media, which includes most of the entertainment industry, saw Obama as some sort of messiah.

I realize certain right-wing talk-show hosts liked to make jokes about Obama being "the messiah" and "the anointed one" back in the 2008 and 2012 election campaigns, and that certain of their listeners were gullible enough to believe this was something Obama's supporters were calling him, but I thought even most right-wingers had realized by now this was an attempt at humor by the various Limbaugh-types who were repeating it.

We had a couple of threads related to this back in 2011. One of them, which I started, was intended as an examination of the claim that liberals were constantly telling us that Barack Obama is the smartest president ever, which conservative poster BeAChooser had made. BeAChooser was able to provide examples of right-wing media making the claim that liberals were always saying this but was not able to provide actual examples of liberals saying this.

In writing the OP for that thread I made a reference to the messiah claim as well:

... There are actually 2 broad questions which are the intended topic of this thread.

The first is: who exactly is it who has said that Obama is 'the smartest guy to ever sit in the Oval Office'? (Is it one person, or many? Is it someone we've heard of? When and where did they say it?)

Going by past performance, I am guessing that BAC has not really heard people calling Barack Obama the smartest guy ever to sit in the Oval Office. I suspect what he has actually heard is people claiming that people are calling Barack Obama the smartest guy to ever sit in the Oval Office.

In the past, various right-wing humorists have referred to Barack Obama as "the Messiah" and "The Anointed One" -- part of a running gag in which they pretend that people on the left actually look upon and refer to Obama that way. A number of their listeners have actually fallen for the joke. My guess is that this is something similar.

So the second question I hope this thread can address is: where does the idea that people have been calling Barack Obama 'the smartest guy to ever sit in the Oval Office' actually come from? Are there really a significant number of people out there who are saying Barack Obama is our smartest president ever -- or is it instead that there are some people out there who are claiming this is being said a lot, and other people listening to them who are too gullible to bother checking the claim out?

One of the posters in that thread wanted to discuss the messiah claim, so I spun that off into a thread of its own ("Who calls Barack Obama the messiah -- and why?") so we could examine that claim as well.

In that thread I presented evidence in support of my claim that "people such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity routinely refer to Barack Obama as 'The Messiah', 'The Anointed One', and 'The One' -- not because they actually believe that Barack Obama is the Messiah but in an attempt to mock Barack Obama and his followers", and I invited anyone who could to provide evidence in support of the echo chamber claim that Barack Obama's supporters frequently refer to him as the Messiah. No one was able to provide any substantive evidence in support of the latter claim.

I've bumped that thread for your benefit, so that you can present evidence now to support the claim if you seriously believe it's true. (Or, if posting in a 6-year-old thread doesn't appeal to you, we can start a brand-new thread to discuss it.)
