Wouldn't most (unbiassed) 5th graders be able see that he's spewing nonsense when he talks about UV light as a cure for Covid, wind turbines causing cancer, magnets in water, raking forests to prevent forest fires, nuking hurricanes etc.? Or at least suspect that he isn't quite right in the head?

Everything he does makes perfect sense, if you start with the assumption that he is a weak, insecure narcissist. Try it.
I did. Then I realised he is demented and insane as well. He should really be in a facility for irretrievably criminal lunatics, where he can wander the gardens talking to imaginary underlings and thinking he is king of the world. He seems barely functional at a human level, let alone as the senior official of a modern nation.

Agreed, which makes explaining his many supporters an issue.

The US education system. I don't mean the academics. I mean the instilling the blind adherence to blinkered jingoism. It is a constant and sad surprise to be continually reminded how ignorant and disdainful many Americans are of the world, people and cultures outside their village. MAGA feeds and encourages that ignorance and xenophobia, because it creates a sense of belonging for them.

That could have been an option, but I don't think the Tempest can be available until the mid 2030s, and Canada's current fleet of F18s will probably need to be replaced before then.

Would'nt that be the Tempest 2, given the World War 2 British fighter of that name?

Michael Kosta checks in with Canadians to see how they feel about Donald Trump's aims to make them America's 51st state, including one ex-pat who immigrated to Canada when Trump first became president and a gun-loving member of Canada's silent MAGA minority.
Comments mainly from Canadians, it seems:
"To any of my fellow Canadians who want Canada to become the 51st State. You are free to leave and move to America, we’ll even help you pack your bags"

"I would not want to live in any country that thought Trump was fit for office."

"Why would I want to lower my standard of living to become American?"

There was a Tempest II and also V and VI in WW2.

Typhoons now Tempests later?

Typhoons are probably a better air interdiction option than F35, the SAAB Viggen would also be an option a bit cheaper so you get more for your money and deployable to temporary air strips.

I seem to recall a bit of sensitivity from the Germans* about the Eurofighter being called Typhoon, and Typhoon 2 would have intensified such pushback.

* As so often what I actually read was not themselves taking offence, it was others being offended on their behalf in anticipation. Maybe the name has no resonance in Germany.

BBC feature on Sepersatist movement in Alberta and it's leader Dennis Modry.

He wants independence from Canada or to be part of the USA.

I do wish the BBC wouldn't provide a platform for fringe loons and in the process both give the impression that they're far more mainstream than they are and provide them with a veneer of credibility.

Perhaps he does want to be part of the US but does he really want everything that goes with it ? There's a presumption among people who want to split from a country or union that they will continue to enjoy all the things they consider as benefits from the old place AND get a new slew of benefits from the new place with no downsides whatsoever. I think Brexit is a great example of this, and how disappointed they are like to become.

If Hegseth gets involved, Canada will know about it before Donald does. Also The Atlantic Magazine, New York Post, LA Times, CBC and ABC news services, Pravda, The Daily Mirror in the UK, and my elderly aunt's bingo team group chat.
Operation Tweak of the Thumb, 51, has begun!

Is that the biggest swing ever in Canadian politics?
Cue President Trump claiming that this is evidence of voter fraud on a massive scale, that the results are fraudulent, that this is a clear indication that the Canadians really do want to be the 51st state, and that this is the causus belli he's been looking for.

He cannot process or accept the fact that he is so unpopular that his involvement could fundamentally tip the balance away from himself.

edited to add:

Mark Carney and the Liberal Party have claimed a remarkable victory in the Canadian election – and it appears to have come with a big assist from Donald Trump.

Will he now move towards the use of force?

IMO not directly, he's too much of a coward.

If I were him I'd have US troops accidentally go over the border trying to chase fentanyl suppliers and accidentally engaging with Canadian forces. Look to the start of the Spanish American war to see some examples.

I hope Carney finds a suitably worded way to thank his great benefactor for singlehandedly gifting the election to him in one of the all time great political reversals.

I wish people would stop giving him ideas.

"President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us - that will never ever happen"

Filthy globalists. Corrupt chicken ◊◊◊◊ bastards. They’ll continue to treat their citizens like garbage. Traitors.

All the MAGA accounts claiming that the sudden turnaround of the Liberals shows that the Globalists have fixed the election.

Donald needs to save the Canadian people from the WEF and Globalist Elites that have hijacked their country.

I think Donald will do something stupid over this.

Fish in a barrel. Everything Trump does is stupid.

He already did, of course. Can he top it?
Yes, he can invade, or at least deploy a military force to "safeguard the democracy of the soon to be cherished 51st state".

The "true result" of the Canadian election was a resounding "Yes" to joining the US, which frightened the (((globalists))) so they overturned the election results.

The Conservatives had a clear lead until the (((globalists))) acted and although they appeared to be against joining the US that was just a clever ruse and their first act would have been to immediately apply for statehood.

This outrage cannot stand, lovers of freedom and democracy everywhere will applaud when the fake election result is investigated (by Musk and his lads) and the correct result put in it's place.

Exactly that.
Donald will be taking this as a personal insult.
Presuming, of course, that he's been given the news and he understands the implications.

I mean his handlers could simply have told him that he was a runaway winner in the poll as a write-in candidate and as such Canada is in line to be the 51st state as soon as the paperwork is completed.

Good boy Junior, daddy will be proud.

Donald Trump Jr. reposted

@chrispavlo...

Why isn't anyone talking about how President Trump handed a gift to @Pierre Poilievre, and Pierre screwed it up?
Pierre should've taken the position as the only person who can unite with the USA and make Canada a powerhouse.
Instead, he chose Trump hate and joined the Liberals.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said his country deserves respect from the US and will only enter trade and security talks with President Donald Trump "on our terms".

Speaking exclusively to the BBC as the polls were closing, Carney said he would only visit Washington when there was a "serious discussion to be had" that respected Canada's sovereignty.

Good boy Junior, daddy will be proud.
Imagine how few votes he would have polled if being the 51st state was his main platform. Might he have conceivably ended up in third ?

Edited to add.....

Though encouragingly it does seem to indicate that they know the result and are not (currently) questioning its validity.

LOL. Yeah, sure, that's what happened. Poilievre was a shoo-in until Trump handed him a steaming bowl of deadly political poison and somehow he didn't turn that assistance into victory.

Actually, serious point, do you suppose Trump Jr is acting as a lightning rod here, dipping a careful toe into the absurdly counterfactual just to see the reaction? If the howls of laughter are too deafeningly loud the rest of the faithful may try a different line.

I've been waiting to see what the line they take will be. I didn't honestly expect "Threatening to take over their country should have been amazingly popular, so how come it didn't help our friend win? I guess he must have dropped the ball by trying to dissociate himself from us".

Every Canadian wanted to become American, therefore the election was fixed.

Sir, I want you to know I asked my Canadian girlfriend and she said everyone wants to be part of the 51st state.

Polly is a Trump sycophant, and that probably would have been ok right up until Trump said "51st state". That put him in a position of having to madly back-pedal away from any policies that were supportive of the USA. That, combined with his Trudeau bashing that had to end when Trudeau resigned, left the Conservatives with little choice but late-to-the-game mimicking of the Liberals "Canada First" campaign that Carney latched onto as soon as he entered the leadership race. In the end they mostly won the Conservative-safe ridings they would have won anyway and made no inroads with voters who are genuinely concerned about Trump's insanity. And although it was not discussed much in the media, my opinion is that Polly's expressed dislike of Canada's social programs, a topic that he also had to back-pedal on, cost him a significant number of votes.

There's also his bashing "woke" and saying he'll use the notwithstanding clause to implement a touch on crime agenda.

CBC's Vote Compass article on April 12 shows "Social Justice" fourth on the list of voter concerns, and "Crime" way down the list at #15 out of 18. Mind you, the Vote Compass is on the CBC's site. People using it could well skew to the left, so the results may not accurately reflect all the voters.

Congratulations Canada! Trump can really change elections after all.

I thought Tonya said she broke up with you. She's with me now.

This.

His handlers will tell him something to the effect: "Your prediction came true. The winner you said would win in Canada has won. You can rest easy on that because all is going to your plan on the northern border."

And Trump will not only believe it, he will parrot it.
