Would this be a good idea, a popular one or perhaps a bad, unpopular one? How would Trump go about it?

He doesn't seem to know much about economics - so much for his Business School training - if he thinks 25% tariffs are going to coerce a desperate economically wrecked Canada to come begging on their knees to join the US.

Also, 'cherished' sounds a tad sarcastic.

President Donald Trump has again threatened Canada in their emerging trade war, repeating that the neighbouring country should become "our cherished 51st state".

The US leader said this weekend that he is imposing 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico.

I'm content to let the Canadians tick their own choice as it would seem a particularly inappropriate time for foreigners to try to tell them what they should do. I'm not in any particular doubt which one they would tick.

One question - what is the actual process for a new state being added to the USA? Or rather what was it meant to be pre-Trump?

You'd think a Trumpian America would most appeal to the nationalist elements in Canada ... which also seems like the kind of demographic that would absolutely balk at the idea becoming a US state (not that other demographics wouldn't balk, but I don't even see the far right as being on board).

I miss the 'Canada should join the EU' option :)
At least Dump and putin's shenanigans have been good for EU and NATO expansion. Norwegians have been staunch opponents of EU membership since forever, but are now reluctantly starting to having a debate (even though the majority would still vote against).

As for the poll, don't understand why the question is even asked. Obviously the answer is no. You might as well ask if it'd be good or bad if Dump and Elonia lost their bearings while furiously making out in a 20th floor hotel room and toppled out of the window.

While I still breathe it's not going to happen. I would quite literally die fighting before calling myself an American.

It's not that bad. It's not great, but it has been worse in the past.

If ◊◊◊◊ gets too bad I'm running to Canada though. I'm only about 80 miles from the border and I have technical skills. Is there any honorary Canadian citizenship I can apply for?

I would enjoy Australia but alas, I am stuck in the United States no matter what. I have a felony on my record from about 25 years ago and no countries let in people like us! That would be awesome though, without the felony I'd probably qualify since I've been doing networking for 10+ years and have been in IT for closer to 20.

Have you considered running for President?

Lol I'd probably be better at it than the current turd in the WH, but no. I'm happy with what I do, I just wish I didn't have to do it surrounded by a vast amount of stupid ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ that vote for someone like Trump.

A felony conviction used to be de-rigeur 150 years ago for Australian immigration.

Actually, not true. Convict transportation to Australia ceased in 1868. But from the 1820's onwards, and especially with the Gold Rush era, there were far more locals and migrants than convicts in the Australian colonies. Convicts were simply a section of Britain's prison population relocated, sort of similar to what Trump wants to do with Gitmo. And it all started when some upstarts in the Americas refused to take any more there.

But hey, we are off-track again!

Unlike the USA, you will not automatically be declined an Australian visa if you have a criminal record.

That might be worth some serious consideration. I wonder what the wife will think about it when I bring it up tonight.
Basically, if you have a record for something like shoplifting in your distant youth but otherwise have been an exemplary citizen, that should be fine. If you are a convicted mass-murderer, the process could take a little longer. YMMV ;)

ON TOPIC!

Canada won't have anything to do with becoming part of the USA for the simple reason that they would need to give up all the benefits they already enjoy, and be forced to accept all the disadvantages the USA suffers from. That's not a bargain, it's a threat.

I wouldn't say "exemplary" but haven't been in any trouble anyway.

Taking over Canada will be easy. Just a matter of marching......

(Not the most brilliant thing Thomas Jefferson said).

What would Canadians gain from becoming a USA state - I can quickly come up with a list of what they would lose but apart from perhaps "If the Ruskies every attacked via the artic" I sincerely can't think of anything.

It would lose its Commonwealth status, with KCIII as its head.

Then there is the most important topic of ice hockey. Come the Olympic Games, no more USA v Canada. It'll just be USA :USA: v Finland. :FINLAND::thumbsup:.

Either could be seen as a gain or loss depending on your perspective.

Tells you how far down in the gutter the DAILY MAIL has fallen. (Although even the Mail had to describe Trump's boorish post-plane crash comments as 'shocking'.) Yesterday, after Trump 'paused' the 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, it had the headline: "Trump wins!" when everybody knows he was forced to backpedal. Because of course, both of the 'deals' for Mexico and Canada to man their borders with extra personnel were agreed the end of last year and nothing at all to do with tariffs.

So Trump's belief that Canada would want to become the 51st state due to the crippling effects of the tariffs and economic ruin (haha) looks to be a 'Liz Truss' moment of small state/small brain stupidity.

Trump said one benefit of becoming a state is Canadians would get better healthcare.

I'm not aware of this claim being repeated, by him or anyone else, so I like to think Michael Spicer may have had a word in his ear.

"moment"? Trump's entire life consists of only small brain stupidity. There is nothing else there.
