Right Wing Terrorism

The swastika figures prominently in Indian culture. Are we sure they were Nazi flags, or swastika flags?

Yeah, we're sure

Because nothing says "Indian culture" quite like "Die Reichsflag"

Come on Ron... its Obvious!

I'd not seen the pictures, and looking at that picture of the guy, I suspect I know why. Not exactly the image conjured up by the story, is it?

Nothing says "white supremacist Nazi" quite like a brown-skinned Indian, right?

Ah, I see. With a name like Sai Varshith Kandula, you were expecting him to look like this...

FYI- on the contrary, Nazis and Hitler were and are still quite popular in India.

Have a we think about India's colonial history, and have a guess why this might be the case.

India is fast becoming a totalitarian one.

He was described in the initial story I saw as a "19 year old man from Missouri.... with Nazi flags...".

I confess I wasn't expecting a young Ghandi, no. And neither, I suspect, was the person who posted this in the Right Wing Terrorism thread.

Pretty ***** racsist to assume only fair skinned people can be right-wing, or terrorists, or both.

ETA: also referring to people of South Asian heritage as "Ghandi"....

He told the FBI that he wanted to kill Biden, overthrow the government and take over himself. He seems to have lacked a weapon other than the U-Haul truck.

They are, after all, the actual Aryan race.

Great story; In 1938 a German Publisher in Nazi Germany wanted to publish a German translation of "THe Hobbit" and sent Jrr Tolkien a from that certified he was or "Aryan Descent". Tolkien who being a expert in Nordic and Germanic studies, had nothing but contempt for Hilter and the Nazis nonsense answered that he could not certify he was of Aryan descent because, to the best of his knowledge, none of his ancestors were from India....

I vaguely reminds me of an alternate history short story I read once. Germany beat England fairly early in WWII and took control of all of their colonial territories, including India. Gandhi believed that the stories of Nazi atrocities were just British lies and propaganda and Germany could be negotiated with reasonably. When Nazi oppression began, he tried to continue the use of passive resistance. It didn't end well.

You might have a point with right-wing and terrorist, but this guy sported Nazi flags. Nazism as a racially-inclusive ideology, seriously? Whatever will they think of next?

No, I think I'll stick with confused and mentally ill, rather than right wing.

The guy launches a lone wolf kidnap and coup plot at the WH fence in a U-Haul... "confused and mentally ill" is just the baseline starting point.
[emoji1]

In other words... white supremacy is not a synonym for hard right extremism. Modi himself proves that point.

Then your suspicion was wrong because I suspected "Sai Varshith Kandula" was an Indian name so I looked it up just to make sure. And I said A Nazi flag, not plural.

I suspect anyone who uses any logic in this political atmosphere would assume someone...of any background...who rams a truck into a WH security barrier, declares he wants to harm Biden and had a Nazi flag and duct tape in his truck just might be an example of right-wing terrorism.

ETA:

Law enforcement sources said he climbed out of the U-Haul truck waving a Nazi flag and said that he wanted to kill the president and seize power.
Kandula allegedly told investigators that “Nazis have a great history" and that he looked up to Hitler as “a strong leader.”

There is no doubt Kandula suffers from mental illness that doesn't mean his actions weren't influenced by right-wing white supremacist rhetoric. Frankly, IMO, most white supremacists have a screw loose.

You may have suspected lots of things, but if you knew his name you didn't see fit to mention it. Leaving it off leaves a radically different impression of the perpetrator but I suspect that was your intention.

LOL! As if those two are mutually exclusive. Have you listened to QANON crazies? Is the Great Replacement theory sane and left wing? Kanye West is mentally ill and spouts antisemitic rhetoric: "“the Jewish community, especially in the music industry…they’ll take us and milk us till we die", “Jewish underground media mafia” and alleging that “every celebrity has Jewish people in their contract.” And there's more.

LOL! Oh, right... no one is this group ever watches the media where his name is/was being splashed all over! I just knew that no one here would ever see it and I could really pull a fast one on you all!

Do yourself a favor and stop digging your hole deeper.

I would have thought that anyone threatening violence would be automatically excluded from the ranks of Gandhis, though perhaps Ghandis are like the Bizarro version.

I would also surmise that a person who attempts to overthrow the government with a U-Haul truck and a flag is probably sufficiently brain-fried and rocker-impaired that small anomalies like skin tone and ethnicity are no obstacle to his delusion.

The flag was definitely Nazi...

However, the right wing Hindu movement lead by the RSS had a gread deal of admirers of Hitler and his final solution among its founders.

Well there is a strong nazi current within hindu nationalism, encouraged greatly by nazi propoganda re "Aryan" origins. India in many ways is a really racist country.

So you're going with, "he wasn't rational enough to be a Nazi".

Actually, I just can't be arsed to engage with you and your kind anymore. You don't discuss anything of substance; you merely misrepresent and mock and think it constitutes a discussion.

LOL. I see I was wrong. You haven't put the shovel down. :dig:

"You don't discuss anything of substance"

"you merely misrepresent"

You accuse me of deliberately not naming the U-Haul suspect in order to leave "a radically different impression of the perpetrator" and then accuse ME of "misrepresenting" things?

"and mock and think it constitutes a discussion"

Some things deserve mocking.

If you "can't be arsed to engage" with me, fine. I'm sure I'll survive quite well.

The DOJ is apparently not taking the threat very seriously. He's only being charged with "depredation of property of the United States".

https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/24/politics/u-haul-white-house-suspect/index.html

Kandula was heard making specific threats of killing Biden. I suspect that, if the DOJ does not later re-instate the original more serious charges, it could be due to the fact that he carried no weapon, there were no explosives in the truck, and that he clearly has mental problems. "Authorities are considering the role mental health may have played in this incident, one source said."

It's not uncommon for more serious charges to be added later, which may also happen. "It’s possible that prosecutors add additional charges as the case progresses."

It wasn't a poster. It was lifted from the Texas Democrats website. Here is the full quote.

"Today, following yesterday’s horrific mass shooting in Allen, and another just days ago in San Jacinto County, the Texas Democratic Party is again calling on Texas Republicans to allow for common sense gun safety measures to be implemented in Texas.

We support the Second Amendment – and we also believe that the best way to uphold Texas’ strong heritage of responsible gun ownership for self defense, hunting, and recreation is to make sure we’re keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals and others deemed dangerous to themselves and others. It’s long past time to implement these life-saving, science-backed tactics – small differences in the law that would make enormous strides toward preventing suicides, mass shootings, tragic accidents, and other gun violence.

The policies we are asking to be implemented would in no way infringe upon the Second Amendment – they would have no bearing on the ability of any law-abiding Texan of sound mind to purchase or own any federally-legal firearm. But they do have the potential to save countless lives of our fellow Texans."
I seriously doubt that Texas Democrats referring to "criminals and others deemed dangerous to themselves and others", are talking about "black and hispanic people"

Here is a brief summary of what Texas Democrats are asking for...
1. Universal, stringent, thorough background checks with no private sale – or “gun show” – loopholes. 87% of Americans agree

2. Reasonable waiting periods to purchase a firearm. 77% of all Americans agree

3. Raise the age to 21 to purchase any firearm in Texas.
76% of Texans agree

4. Extreme Risk Protection Orders – a.k.a. “Red Flag” Laws.
72% of Texans agree

5. Strict requirements for safe firearm storage.

I agree with most of these;
I disagree with B;i I think 18 should be the limit. That is when you get your full rights a s a citizen; see no reason to make an exception here
And although I am very strongly in favor of safe storage, don't see how you can enforce 5.

You can't, but they could enforce the penalties for not safely storing a firearm if it's used in a crime or negligent act. At one time suicide was illegal in the US but still "some states have attempted suicide listed as a crime in their criminal statutes," which can then be used to court order mental health treatment.

Quoting the penultimate paragraph of that article:
CNN said:
During the hearing, [US Magistrate Judge Robin] Meriweather informed Kandula that the charge he’s facing carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or a combination of the two. It also carries a mandatory restitution payment.

However, the right wing Hindu movement lead by the RSS had a gread deal of admirers of Hitler and his final solution among its founders.

Let's not forget Chandra Bose, who in the 30's saw himself as the "Il Duce" of India, before he was kicked out of the Congress party, and then fled to Germany to become a Hitler puppet.
