Just over three decades ago, my roommate and I came across a group of midshipmen blasting this song in the chapel parking lot prior to the annual USNA/USAFA football game. I asked if he thought they knew it was a gay pride anthem; he said they will pretend otherwise.

(DADT was the hip new mantra at the time.)

I wish I was at home, but I have a Studs Terkel book of WWII experiences. There’s a huge section with vets describing how they were really gay and it was not difficult to find fellow soldiers who were.
Turns out that “gay” is not brand new

My best friend's roommate at the time was gay and he (the roommate) told us there was an entire subculture right there under our noses.

Came back to the 25 year reunion with his long term partner and it was just wild how much the world had changed.
