More pain at the petrol pump as NZ dollar trades at nearly two year low

The New Zealand dollar is trading at a nearly two-year low, meaning New Zealanders can expect more pain at the petrol pump.

Falling to around 55.5 US cents to the NZ dollar, this rate has not been seen since October 2022.

The falling rate means imported goods - including fuel - will cost more, but it's good news for exporters, who will see higher returns.

AA fuel price spokesperson Terry Collins told Morning Report if people thought prices for petrol now were bad, the prices at the pump now are from oil bought over a month ago so it will only get worse.

"It's gone up $10 a litre...and those contracts were forward contracts so we're yet to see those prices come through, so we'll be seeing more prices going up."
What you say, a typo? Shirley not!

Since living in Japan for a few decades I'm now just as comfortable using Celsius as I used to be with Fahrenheit. You just need to remember a few reference temperatures. 20 degrees is a nice round number and also a perfectly comfortable room temperature. Similar to 70 degrees in Fahrenheit although it is actually equivalent to 68 F, but that's not a round number. Then you just need to know that anything over 30 is hot and anything under 10 is chilly.

Hmm... The petrol I buy (U98) is currently selling for AU$2.87 per litre.

That would be AU$11.48 per US gallon, or US$7.20 per US gallon.

So even for the high price we pay for U98 it still sounds like NZ is paying through the nose.

(NB. I buy U98 because it is 'cleaner' particularly lower in sulphur, and I only use about 30 litres per year, so the price isn't a big deal.)

You might want to shop around. ;)

Crumbs, I thought we had it bad in cane toad country. Have never paid that much up here. We get peeved when U98 goes for $2.20 odd. ( I use the Petrol Spy app - but like you, probably fill up once a month or less).

A recent trip to NZ we paid on average $2.60 and blessed the hybrid hire car that got 4l/100k. We thought $2.90 on the remote west coast was a rip off - now it appears to be their norm.

Next trip will be a return to Japan, where everything was much cheaper!

:)

Yeah, I'm still happy with my purchase of a plug-in hybrid.

Coming up on 10 years of ownership.

I use 30 litres per year, because the car's systems require it to maintain the fuel system. (15 litres every six months.)

Oddly, we can’t justify the cost of a new hybrid at the moment because of our low mileage (kilometreage?).
I also need a car that can tow a boat - which I’ll probably also upgrade (to a larger one for safety offshore).

Understandable.

I reached the point where it was difficult to get in and out of my car (Barina GSi /AKA Opel Corsa B) (rated as a sub-compact in the USA) and basically traded up to a larger 'hatchback' i.e. an Outlander PHEV. But the fuel savings really pay back for someone with higher mileage than me.

Since most of my driving is below 30 km (round trip) I mostly drive it as an EV.

I can definitely see the point with towing a boat. This model car (no matter the powertrain) is limited to 1,500 kg braked load.

My kayak (and trailer) is way under that limit, most powered boats are way over.

Typically I see boats towed by Nissan Patrols, Toyota Land Cruisers or similar.

NB. According to Wikipedia, my current car is classed as a 'Compact Crossover SUV', but I prefer to call it a 'soft-roader'
i.e. good for mud, gravel, snow, sand, boat-ramps... but I wouldn't take it up a fire-trail, or anywhere that requires ground clearance.

For a man with a trailer and a kayak, it's pretty much ideal.

Is this a pleasure boat? Does your EV boat hauler even offset the carbon footprint of those boat engines out on the water so you can bask in the sun?

AU$2.87 = NZ$3.21. Current price here is NZ$2.76, so you are paying 16% more.

If it goes over NZ$3.00 here I'll be ecstatic.

As others have pointed out, that $2.87 is unusual here. I just took the price from BP's website, I'm now thinking that is 'recommended retail' or such like.
Sorry - when you said 'the petrol I buy' I presumed you were talking about the price you actually pay. I don't look on websites for prices, I get it from the sign at the gas station. So my price is less than an hour old. However It only relates to that particular gas station and doesn't include any fuel discounts. It's what I would pay today if I had an EV.

I've certainly paid that much, but it's been pointed out to me that there are other brands that are more like $2.20.
