[Merged] Musk buys Twitter!/ Elon Musk puts Twitter deal on hold....

I think so. Most of the skills that Elon Musk seems to have are to do with self-promotion and office politics.

I mean, say what you will, but building a persona where many people passionately see you as the tech messiah is an achievement. Even more of one given how incompetent he really is.

He's good at office politics in the same way that Genghis Kahn was good at international diplomacy. If he wasn't in charge of the various companies that he runs, he would have been fired fro all of them.

The only goos thing about what has happened with Musk is I don't have to read or hear a lot of "real life Tony Stark" crap anymore.

Here's a story in The Verge about the saga:

Extremely Hardcore

Now Esther Crawford is gone too. She's the loyalist who tweeted a picture of herself sleeping in her office.

But Elon promises big compensation for those who remain.

I take his promises with a grain of salt.

Meanwhile, Musk has made it difficult for the people who work at Twitter to know the full scope of his cuts. The company’s internal directory has been offline since he took over. Last week, Musk shut down the ability for employees to use the company’s Slack. After turning off Slack, Musk also disabled Google Chat for work emails without explanation — a move that employees now think was intended to thwart internal communication during the layoffs.

Current and former employees I’ve spoken to estimate that Twitter’s total headcount is well below 2,000 now versus the roughly 7,500 people on the payroll when Musk took over. As one employee who was just laid off told me, “I think he’s just tearing this thing down to the studs and trying to run as lean as possible till the market turns around.”

I’ve totally seen this executive BS happen before, although not at the scale of twitter. This has all the hallmarks of a CEO who has only the vaguest of what he’s trying to accomplish, usually “make more money” or “sell company”, and has no actual idea how to make that happen.

The absolute dumbest idea Musk had is to think that software engineers couldn’t come up with a way to chat outside of twitter’s direct control.

We are going to go bust - here have some shares.....

I exercised about $500 of my options when I quit my last startup job. It was more of show of good will that they do well than any real expectation of investment. They then started trying to retain people with more shares after that.

I find it hilarious that twitter, which is as far from a startup as a business could be, is pulling the same tactic. Is it fair to call it a "shutdown" instead?

It's becoming more and more difficult to not see this as Musk's poor first attempt at the direct work of managing a company and presume by extension that the other businesses he ostensibly owns are for the most part actually run by other more competent people.

This should be fairly self evident given that Tesla and SpaceX - both large companies - seem to be operating pretty smoothly in spite of the fact that their CEO is absent destroying Twitter.

Looks like Twitter is now the new 4chan.

Twitter insiders: We can't protect users from trolling under Musk

Twitter insiders have told the BBC that the company is no longer able to protect users from trolling, state-co-ordinated disinformation and child sexual exploitation, following lay-offs and changes under owner Elon Musk.

Exclusive academic data plus testimony from Twitter users backs up their allegations, suggesting hate is thriving under Mr Musk's leadership, with trolls emboldened, harassment intensifying and a spike in accounts following misogynistic and abusive profiles.

Current and former employees of the company tell BBC Panorama that features intended to protect Twitter users from trolling and harassment are proving difficult to maintain, amid what they describe as a chaotic working environment in which Mr Musk is shadowed by bodyguards at all times. I've spoken to dozens, with several going on the record for the first time.

The former head of content design says everyone on her team - which created safety measures such as nudge buttons - has been sacked. She later resigned. Internal research by Twitter suggests those safety measures reduced trolling by 60%. An engineer working for Twitter told me "nobody's taking care" of this type of work now, likening the platform to a building that seems fine from the outside, but inside is "on fire".

Another interesting story of Twitter's current employment status woes.

Man sells company to Twitter in 2021 because he has Muscular Dystrophy and wishes to provide for his family by being a Twitter wage earner instead.

Man is locked out of his Twitter accounts and is unable to get an answer from HR whether he is fired or not for several days.

Man engages in bizarre Twitter exchange with Elon Musk and subsequently finds out that he has been fired.

I suspect that Elon may have caused himself another legal headache.

I can however write for an hour or two at a time.

This wasn't a problem in Twitter 1.0 since I was a senior director and my job was mostly to help teams move forward, give them strategic and tactical guidance.

But as I told HR (I'm assuming that's the confidential health information you are sharing) I can't work as a hands on designer for the reasons outlined above.

I'm typing this on my phone btw. It's easier for because I only need to use one finger.

Congratulations on helping him prove to a court you discriminate against disabled people.

wow. the guy, Halli, that Elon Musk has been mocking is not only a class act, but was literally on a list of "do not fire" VIPs because of how expensive his exit package was (likely because, if what Halli's other tweets say are true, Twitter acquired his company for a good price)

Hmmm.... That is only a problem if you actually pay the exit package. :p

It will add another lawsuit for Musk to defend though.

The Best of Dying Twitter account has a series of screenshots showing the exchange between Halli and Elon. It's nastier and less professional than you would expect.

It probably wasn't wise for Elon to admit that Halli's disability factored into his decision to terminate.

Elon Musk said:
The reality is that this guy (who is independently wealthy) did no actual work, claimed as his excuse that he had a disability that prevented him from typing, yet was simultaneously tweeting up a storm.

Can’t say I have a lot of respect for that.

Exactly !

That said, any lawsuit will take years and Musk/Twitter can probably weasel out of any judgement. If there are enough judgements against Twitter, presumably Musk can just declare it bankrupt and transfer any assets to another company leaving the liabilities behind.

I'm not the least bit surprised Musk travels with bodyguards even to the bathroom at his own company.

I thought this was a pretty solid joke, then I thought wait, that could very well be true.

So I looked it up, and Hel's bells, probably the best choice he's made at the company.

Read the Twitter exchange. Like they say there, absolutely, he's scum, is all. It's breathtaking, the man's completely unprovoked douchebaggery. He"s literally psycho. Pathetic, and completely lacking in self-respect, those that are still working in that dump.

The thought process where someone goes, "I know, I'll point out that he has a disability, thereby proving that he doesn't work hard enough! That'll totally prove that I'm in the right!"

Nobody has ever needed to log off more.

I am still waiting for a few people on this site who were carrying water for a long time for Musk to admit they were wrong.
Wierd thing is most of them were to the left politically, but they were so in love with Space X they would excuse anything that Musk said or did, and would go after anybody who criticised Muak. They have been silent on Musk for about a year now.
Sad thing is most of them were people who really should have known better.

Well, again, it might help if we knew who you were talking about. I wasn't a full-throated critic of Musk back before the Kids in a Cave incident - am I counted as one of the people who should now apologise to you?

Elon is now walking back a lot of the stupid nonsense he engaged in today.

Elon Musk said:
I would like to apologize to Halli for my misunderstanding of his situation. It was based on things I was told that were untrue or, in some cases, true, but not meaningful.

He is considering remaining at Twitter.

Likely, his lawyers blew his phone up telling him how bad this was.

Likely, his lawyers blew his phone up telling him how bad this was.

Time will tell whether this is a genuine walk-back or whether he's trying to mitigate the effects of his earlier Tweets.

Musk just jumped on the Jan 6th denial train with a tweet of support for Tucker Carlson.

In case there was any doubt, "body of work" should cover any question about whether Elon Musk is genuinely remorseful about his exchange with Halli Thorleifsson (as opposed to being remorseful about the legal implications of the exchange) - he is most likely not and is happy to promote right wing conspiracy theories.
