[Merged] Musk buys Twitter!/ Elon Musk puts Twitter deal on hold....

Tesla would have been a better thing (but not so massively overvalued) without Musk, and without SpaceX, NASA would have been much further along in the rocket programme.

I don't know about that SpaceX thing. We were left with no manned space launch system for quite a number of years. Would lack of SpaceX existing have made NASA more efficient in manned missions, and/or given them more funding? I really rather doubt it.

I hope you're sitting down before you read this plot twist.

A new statement from local police provides the first official account of what happened during the incident. The South Pasadena police department has confirmed that an incident involving two vehicles was reported to the police on Tuesday night, but said that a member of Elon Musk’s security team is currently a suspect in the investigation, not a victim.

...

A 29-year-old man from Connecticut told police that he had recently exited the 110 freeway, and had stopped to use his phone in a parking lot. While he was parked, the man said, another vehicle pulled in front of him, blocking his path, and the driver approached him, “accusing him of following him on the freeway.”

So my previous prediction is looking pretty accurate, though to be fair, the other driver does seem to be a bit of a weirdo.

In his communications with The Post, Collado, who said he was a driver for Uber Eats, also made several bizarre and unsupported claims, including that he believed [Grimes] was sending him coded messages through her Instagram posts; that Musk was monitoring his real-time location; and that Musk could control Uber Eats to block him from receiving delivery orders. He said he was in Boucher’s neighborhood to work for Uber Eats.

I actually really wish he wasn’t doing this.

I think that most of us would probably prefer that. Except for those who actually do just want to see Elon/Twitter/Tesla/etc crash and burn.

I'm a bit of a fan of an alternate version of some terms, though, incidentally. Elon's definitely been stupid on that scale, though, and that's not something that many actually like.

Haha, yes, that old chestnut. Agreed, Musk has proved to be colossally stupid, stupid on an epic scale, with his Twitter misadventure.

Doesn't quite explain anything, though, even if this particular case fits as if the terminology was made to order for him; because his "stupidity", as defined, hasn't quite been consistent across his career, has it?

Of course. I probably should have qualified what I said better to be clear that I was referring to the ongoing train wreck. I'm not interested enough in him to break down the rest of his career on that scale, though.

Elon Musk says he will step down as Twitter CEO — once he finds a replacement

https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/20/tech/elon-musk-twitter-ceo/index.html

I think those who think he was told to exit are onto something. This is all so ******* weird who knows?

BTW the T-shirt he is wearing at the World Cup looks exactly like one I have on now. I guess he shops at Kohl's
For himself?? Is he thinking of cloning or something? Or is this for the position of Twitter CEO...

ETA: Either way, Muskie will never "find" anyone as good as himself to fill the positions.

No way is Musk stepping down, especially not after poisoning the well like that.

For himself?? Is he thinking of cloning or something? Or is this for the position of Twitter CEO...

ETA: Either way, Muskie will never "find" anyone as good as himself to fill the positions.

Hence my cynical view from a couple of days ago....

If anyone believes that the poll is fair and/or that Musk will abide by the results, I have a bridge to sell you.

I may still be wrong if/when he steps down. :o

New Ars Technica story. Twitter has a $3billion negative cash flow.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy...er-cost-cuts-on-3-billion-negative-cash-flow/

Some good quotes:

Elon Musk has defended his financial stewardship of Twitter, arguing that the social media platform would have faced a “negative cash flow situation of $3 billion a year” were it not for his controversial cost-cutting efforts.

And

Musk predicted that Twitter’s net cash outflow, “if you didn’t make any changes,” would be about $6 billion to $6.5 billion next year. This is partly because the company has been loaded with $12.5 billion of debt to help to fund his acquisition, which required about $1.5 billion a year in annual debt servicing payments amid rising interest rates, he said.

It appears he is admitting it's all his fault. I guess he could argue that he didn't want to buy Twitter and load it with all that debt.

In that same space, Elon suggest that Twitter might need a "total rewrite". Like... all of it. All of it.

Yes, but, as the person who questioned him about the "crazy stack" demonstrated, he pulled that right out of his arse.

That space demonstrated that Elon Musk has no idea about how advertising works and also no idea about how software engineering works.

A recent comic from "Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal" took a swipe at Musk in a recent strip...

The joke:

Scientists realize that Artificial Intelligence will go "evil" and get loose on the internet. They decide they need to handle it by putting junk on the internet (distractions, falsehoods, etc.) which will distract the AI before it causes problems.

At the very end the General is on the phone, "Elon, we need you!"

Elon Musk was in a Space involving Tesla's stock price. It got weird in a few places.

He says Tesla is going to be 10x harder for him to run than Twitter… not sure that's going to help investor sentiment — given his disaster @ Twitter

He keeps flip flopping, trying to simultaneously claim he's not at Tesla because of the mess that he got Twitter into — while claiming Twitter is an easier problem to solve.

...

Twitter CEO said "it is very easy to buy Twitter bots… it's very cheap" — weird to admit, when you're basing all your major life decisions on Twitter polls?

Twitter CEO claims there's "a warehouse somewhere with 10,000 phones" — and that there are workers "with 100 phones" who are "trolling" his polls

Wow, because someone out there (someone with lots of money to spare) is so obsessed with Elon that they are going to buy thousands of phones and hire hundreds of workers to troll Elon? Makes perfect sense

Not a delusion, yeah

How does he know how many of the bots are voting with him? How does he know that a 100% human vote wouldn't be worse for him?

Deep in his heart, he's just a conspiracy theorist. His first major tweet as owner was spreading Paul Pelosi lies. As Puppycow's post above points out, the bot theory falls apart under the simplest scrutiny, but Elon isn't smart, so he doesn't even bother with that miniscule level of skepticism.

Split a load of non-Twitter stuff to their own thread, whilst stock price of Tesla may play into Twitter's future, general discussion of Tesla, SpaceX and electric cars are off-topic for this thread.
Replying to this modbox in thread will be off topic  Posted By: Darat

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/dec/24/elon-musk-twitter-feature-removal-reports

...

Twitter has restored a feature that promoted suicide prevention hotlines and other safety resources to users looking up certain content, after coming under pressure from users and consumer safety groups.

...snip..

Reuters said on Friday the feature had been taken down this week. Citing two people familiar with the matter, the report said the removal was ordered by the social media platform’s owner, Elon Musk.

After publication of the story, Twitter’s head of trust and safety, Ella Irwin, confirmed the removal but said it was temporary.

“We have been fixing and revamping our prompts. They were just temporarily removed while we do that,” Irwin said in an email to Reuters.

Musk then denied the feature had been removed, and called the Reuters report “fake news”. ...

So it was "fake news" - even though Twitter's head of trust and safety said it had been removed. He's really trying to rebuild trust in Twitter...

There is an old rusty van parked by the side of the road in my town with the following painted on both sides: Trump, Promises Kept. That is how we build trust in this country. We gaslight the **** out of anyone who is willing to read what we write.

Elon is just applying that lesson.

And then there's the bit where he amplified Dmitry Medvedev's insane stream-of-consciousness predictions thread, which amongst other things included that Ol' Musky would soon be President of the US.

That's after the civil war between California and Texas, of course. Don't skip the best part!

Twitter has had extremely spotty connection over the last two hours. On December 24, Musk bragged that he had unplugged some random server rack and that the site continued to function, apparently in some foolish attempt to prove that there's too much useless hardware clogging up the system.

Just for the yuks!

Hacker issues warning to Elon Musk after putting 40 crore Twitter users' data on sale

A threat actor is claiming to have obtained the personal data of 40 crore Twitter users and is attempting to sell it. The actor shared information about the breach on a website and has even issued a warning to Twitter and Elon Musk.

The malicious actor has asked*Elon Musk to either retrieve all the data put on sale by purchasing the entire stack of information or risk a fine of $276 million. He also warned Musk that if the data of the celebrities is leaked, they will not be able to trust Twitter again and "ruin your dream of twitter video sharing platform for content creators."

We wait with anticipation.

Sorry Republican Party, as much as Elmo meets your requirements, he can't run for President. Thank frickin gawd.

Birds of a feather and all that....

"Controversial" social media personality Andrew Tate has been arrested in Romania for human trafficking:

Controversial online influencer Andrew Tate has been detained in Romania as part of a human trafficking and rape investigation.

"The four suspects ... appear to have created an organised crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content meant to be seen on specialised websites for a cost," prosecutors said, according to the Reuters news agency.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-64122628

Andrew Tate was suspended from Twitter for claiming that women bear responsibility for being sexually assaulted. Elon Musk has recently reinstated his account. I'm sure that Twitter's advertisers are jumping at the opportunity to be associated with this kind of individual.

And of course it is made worse for Twitter because every report is mentioning his banning and then unbanning from Twitter. Even if he is not charged and not prosecuted and is totally innocent he's a sufficiently vile person that this furthers the idea that Twitter allows horrible content.
