I have an old friend who in the past was able to throw energy due to a martial arts background. I witnessed this about twenty years ago but my eyes were closed, the people in the room all said that I was not touched though I certainly felt a touch and after a period a very dim red circle formed on me. Now, that man is way past his prime (his power was severely diminished twenty years ago) and he can not perform the feat. I want to convince him to still find a way to prove the phenomenon under laboratory conditions and I think that if JREF is willing to accept the phenomenon as described above he would be willing to perhaps teach a younger person or something and show the world this power that he attests is totally real and observable.

I do not claim to understand this power because explanations involve "chi" which has not been measured or confirmed.

Here are my questions

1) Would JREF take this as a valid claim for the prize
2) How would/could this be tested

My friend is shy in this avenue and does not think JREF will take him seriously or accept this skill as a "supernatural" claim so I told him I would check.

I'm sure a suitable protocol could be devised for testing this.

Please note: This forum is no longer formally associated with the JREF and nobody here speaks on behalf of the JREF. Many of us do, however, have a lot of experience developing protocols for MDC claims, so it's still a decent place to start.

Okay, here's how you'd go about making a claim. First, you have to nail down a specific claim. You need to state clearly and simply what can be done, and under what circumstances. The more specific, the better.

So let's start there. What specific claim do you believe could be demonstrated?
 
The performer can stand approximately three feet away from a volunteer and throw a palm strike approximately six inches away from the volunteer. It may take two to five minutes for the performer to build energy, match breath or otherwise be ready.

The catcher will feel touched and a red circle will form in the targeted area within five minutes.

The performance takes a lot of energy out of the performer so no more than one performance can be expected in one day.

These are the rules I witnessed twenty years ago. Obviously the man is weaker and I suspect that if it were performed now he would have to train a younger person to do it and that person may change some details such as time required for set up or recovery. This is however a "no-touch" impact.
 
On further talks my friend is now unwilling to participate in the test in any way. The explanation he is giving me is that he can not do it at this time and is uninterested in teaching or contacting old training partners but I have encouraged him to give it more thought. I am sorry if this has wasted anyone's time. I promise I am not a troll. Mods may feel free to delete this thread if they so wish

No problem, most people leave town when they know it will be a real test of their abilities. We have wonderful vids from youtube of an old guy who specializes in this - his students are clearly stunt falling as he pretend strikes them!!! It is a total hoot!!! Especially when the fall is not in the direction of the hit or done before he starts to strike!!!!!
 
Possibly seen it but go ahead and post it anyways. I love that stuff. I have a thread on FB with my Skeptics group and I am looking for more vids just like that. Thanks

Second, thanks for asking about this. You are, unfortunately, discovering what investigators of the paranormal discover all the time. A practitioner of the paranormal is told about the MDC and responds somewhat positively, but as soon as they discover that they actually have to do what they say they can, they lose all interest. Maybe this guy neither needs nor wants a million dollars, but I find that hard to believe. Even Bill Gates would like another million. He could always donate it to charity.

This thread will probably be moved to the General Skepticism sub-forum since it's clearly not going to result in a test for the MDC. And it will get a bigger audience there, too.

I know your acquaintance has decided not to participate in the challenge, but I don't understand the highlighted part and would appreciate an explanation.

Do you mean that the part of the volunteer's body turns red as if it were spanked or hit? Would the red part really be circular, or would it be a more amorphous shape?

When this was done to me in the mid nineties it was a faint red circle as if slapped. It felt like he quickly poked me in the chest with his fingertips and the red circle on my chest was rather faint. At the time he was nearing the end of his athletic abilities. If he were writing this he would go on and on about how this is supposed to be a powerful deadly weapon, however, such a power would be harder and less safe to test so I found the full force blast far less interesting

I would be willing to submit myself to any test of such a "powerful and deadly weapon".
