Is there anyone on this forum still interested in magic?

Happy Leap Day from SoMA!

Hi all- Happy Leap Day! Certainly a 366th day that vanishes and reappears on the calendar is a magic adjacent holiday? Hope everyone’s past few months have passed as excellently as possible. This is our first newsletter of the New Year (so also belated Happy New Year!). Our big announcement for 2024 is that we have now officially finalized the date and venue for our next international conference! The SoMA 2024 International Conference will be taking place Nov 12-13, 2024 at the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas. Vegas being one of the performance magic capitals of the world, we’re really excited by the possibilities, and I very much look forward to announcing more details soon! The plan is to have an event that’s similar in structure to our previous conferences in London and Chicago- two days of presentations, performances, and panel discussions, with a gala show. So, for now, please mark your calendars and stay tuned for more registration details.

I just ordered 3 books on mentalism (my favorite kinda magic). I'm terrible at magic. but I enjoy trying it out. Also, I guess I scored one of the books free (from ThriftBooks) 'cause of previous orders. I haven't even ordered that much, so who knows?

I wish you well. Let me know when you are invited to perform on Penn and Teller: Fool Us. :D

I have only a dilettante's understanding of magic but do a lot of reading and viewing and attending the occasional live performance.

I'm on the mailing list for a magic store and I am often amused by the tricks that show up on the P % T show that are available from the store for under $30! Most of magic is in presentation and requires practice practice practice.

I definitely need the practice part. 'Cause when I do get something down, and it works, I forget it a month later and have to start all over again.

As far as presentation goes, I have more success when I don't "care." If I care, then I over think it and give it away.

I say all that like I have much experience. I really don't. But there you go!

The real magic on the Penn & Teller, Fool Us show is Brooke Burke!
She looks exactly the same today as she did 25 years ago.

I recently purchased Banachek's "Psychokinetic Silverware" DVD. I've practiced a bit with some cheap Walmart forks (IIRC, $1.50 for four) and the time bend is easy, but I've also torn many forks in half trying to put in the 180° stem bend.
