I feel like "body double" is an overly quaint concept in the world where the CIA and every other major country's intelligence service would call B.S. on such a tactic in a split second and no I don't think Russia has some kind of super-science level "deep fake" tech yet.

Also why would Russia pretend Putin was still alive if he was dead? What would be their endgame?

Seems rumors are flying that Putin has croaked over the weekend and been replaced by a body double, ah la Paul McCartney in the late 60's.
Could it be true?
Enquirering minds want to know!

That's an interesting and totally plausible theory. But in case you hadn't heard, Paul is dead too.

Let's see how Russia does a Weekend At Bernie's with their deep fake tech for a bit. Pretty sure it's not true but I would welcome it, though not sure who would succeed peacefully.

All I know is, last week YouTube thought I might be interested in short clips of Vladimir Putin making public appearances.

https://www.youtube.com/@moscowdaily

I actually subscribed to this channel, thinking it would make an interesting addition to my YT Shorts feed. But it's actually really redundant and boring. The comments on each clip are a hoot, though. I imagine a guy huddling in the dark, in his state apartment in Ludogorsk Mining Village #35, in BFE Siberia, getting paid in turnips to post "Putin is life! Putiin is love! [Indian Flag]!!!" twice a day.

Anyway, after a few days of these clips in my feed, I'm not wondering if Putin is dead. I'm wondering if Putin is real.

Putin was killed by Captain Ramius when he defected with the Red October, I saw it with my own two eyes.

They've been saying Putin died and got replaced since the end of his second term.

The botox and fillers and general ageing process made conspiracy theorists suspect he wasn't the same guy. But cheek fillers can create the same effect.

A possibly plausible reason is that who ever is actually running things want's consolidate power and get rid of possible rivals before they reveal he's actually dead and who the new guy is?

My headcanon is that he got replaced by the CIA, in Berlin, in the 80s. The reason the CIA aren't ratting out his body doubles today is because they're CIA too.
Well, obviously the CIA plant just died and the real Putin has replaced him.

At some point it will have to be true, I hope its now.

Also, this happened in the US in the 90s, hasn't anyone seen the documentary "Dave"

As per JoeMorgue, a body double makes sense while he's alive but if he's dead what's the point? Eventually all leaders r and down or die & those waiting in the wings to take over don't cry any tears about it. If Putin was dead we'd have a successor or a fight.

My favorite part of the Paul is Dead thing was Ringo's response: "We couldn't prove it wasn't true!"

No matter what they said, it would be just dismissed as part of the conspiracy.

My 2nd favorite was when Paul was on SNL with Chris Farley. And Chris said, "Remember when you were with the Beatles, and everyone said you were dead. That was a hoax, right?" And Paul responded, "That's right, Chris. I wasn't really dead."

Just delivered so great.

Maybe we have a successor, and for some reason it suits them to keep Putin as a figurehead for now.

Let me preface by saying, I don't necessarily believe this but:

Could be the successor doesn't feel totally secure and want a fake Putin while they eliminate potential rivals?

I give it a non-zero probability of being true.

That was my second thought. There's a succession fight going on, but the major players are hoping to have it resolved before the news gets out.

But really the most plausible scenario is that the scumbag is still alive.

Yep, non-zero but not much more than non-zero chance.

One idea going around is that the Kremlin is spreading stories of Puain's demise to test Russian public reactions.

As if any experienced Russian would say a peep more than, " Oh! I so hope that Our Vlad is well and happy! And STRONG! Bog keep him in power for always! Yes, mhm."

My theory for some time for Russia is that either there will be a war of succession and Putin will die, or Putin will die and there will be a war of succession.

If he's actually dead, putting up a fake would delay the inevitable bloodbath for a while longer.

One wonders who the likely successors would be.

Each candidate would have to command the support of some plurality of Oligarchs, I think. Is there a faction of Oligarchs who are marginalized by Putin and his cabal? Are they strong enough to support a successor who promises to elevate their status if he takes power? Who would that successor be? Shoigu? Or, Putin's dominant cabal has their own successor in mind, that they intend to install over the objections of other factions, when Putin finally pisses off to the great unknown. Who would that be? Medvedev?

What would a succession war even look like? Last time, one faction had support of the military, and forced the other faction to capitulate by rolling tanks. Ultimately, succession will be about who takes orders from whom. There's no point in Medvedev declaring himself president, if the military doesn't obey him or the Oligarchs ignore his policies.

The conventional wisdom of the current moment seems to be that a dictator's main job is directing the distribution of profits among the powerful members of his cabal. He is authorized by acclamation to decide who gets what, of all the things produced by the industries and bureaucracies controlled by his cabal. Putin seems to have succeeded by building a coalition of powerful people, who are willing to take his side and let him distribute wealth among them.

Do we see another such coalition forming, or already formed? Or is this going to be a case of the actual ruler(s) installing a public figurehead? Would that even make a difference, in terms of a succession fight?

During Covid, Putin locked himself in his palace and didn't meet with anyone without undergoing extended quarantine.
What's the pandemic Status in Moscow right now?
