Shermer first; then Reston (if you want history) or Wilson (if you want philosophical speculation; the other 3 books are also speculation, they're just not labeled as such).

I haven't read any of those, but based on past form I'd grab the Shermer and skip the Diamond.

I've only read the Diamond out of that lot, which was OK but not great. Nowhere near as good as his "Guns, Germs & Steel", for instance.

Of course, it depends what you're choosing them for. Do you have an especially wobbly table, or...what?
