It sounds like some sort of mafia thing: threats and an illegal organisation.

The verdict and sentence came after a previous trial that began in 2000 after Oktar, along with 50 members of his foundation, was arrested in 1999.

In that court case, Oktar had been charged with using threats for personal benefit and creating an organization with the intent to commit a crime. The charges were dropped but another court picked them up resulting in the latest case.

Are there any more details on the crime?

Probably off-topic, but I actually have a copy of his "Atlas of Creation" at home.

A beautiful book asthetically - a horrendous joke scientifically. Ah well...

You don't happen to be tired of it taking up shelf space? ;)

Nope, I'm keeping it. It could be worth real money some day...

We had it at our institution as well, but I think it was lost when we moved the library recently. Anyway, try to find his Crab spider in one of the comparison pictures. The fossil is a spider crab, and the contemporary animal is a crab spider --- yet somehow their similarity (1) proves that evolution never happened!

There are numerous such mistakes, where the fossil belongs to a different order, class, or even phylum than the contemporary species. Being at a department of zoological systematics can be really fun at such times. However, the note we had made with references to the pages of the more horrible mistakes was in the book, and I don't know where it is.

(1) And no, they are not similar at all...

I was rather disturbed by this at first: nobody should be jailed for being a cretinist or for having any other weird views- only for actions. And Turkey has a bad record on civil rights. Many academics and novelists have been harassed, prosecuted and attacked. However, looking further into it, I see his organisation has been among those organising the physical attacks on academics, and having websites he disagrees with shut down by alleging libel. So while defending to the death (well, metaphorically) his right to be a cretinist, I think the jailing is probably justified.

Is it a one volume edition, one of the three volumes, or all three (I'm not sure there was a one volume complete one - Amazon is unclear.:))

Weird timing. I was on another forum just yesterday when somebody decided to quote his work (without citing it, grrrr). I've never heard of him until yesterday.

Do you have any links to the exact charges? I've heard of wordpress being blocked in Turkey:

But beginning in 1998, BAV spearheaded an effort to attack Turkish academics who taught Darwinian theory. Professors there say they were harassed and threatened, and some of them were slandered in fliers that labeled them "Maoists" for teaching evolution. In 1999, six of the professors won a civil court case against BAV for defamation and were awarded $4,000 each.

But seven years after BAV's offensive began, says Istanbul University forensics professor Umit Sayin (one of the slandered faculty members), the battle is over.
"There is no fight against the creationists now. They have won the war," Sayin tells the Pitch from his home in Istanbul. "In 1998, I was able to motivate six members of the Turkish Academy of Sciences to speak out against the creationist movement. Today, it's impossible to motivate anyone. They're afraid they'll be attacked by the radical Islamists and the BAV."

Are there any details on who was attacked/when etc?

It says Volume 1, and it also includes a letter from the author and a DVD titled "Fossils Disprove Evolution"
