Cont: Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed - part 3

It's really not a big mystery. No question about which came first.

Someone started a thread about Greta, so this is where we discuss Greta.

Search for " Trump ", and see how many hits you get compared to " Greta ".

Talk about obsession and focus .. No comparison. This may be one of the few discussions where Trump is never mentioned, well, up until now.

Honestly, you can't really call yourself a proper environmentalist unless you've been arrested for protesting. :D I noticed that Bob Brown (founder of the Australian Greens party) was arrested - again - the other day.

I think Thunberg has had the experience all over the world.

Germany w/ 40 sec. video: Klimataktivisten Greta Thunberg bortförd av tysk polis (SVT.se, Jan 15, 2023)
Germany (other occasion) w/ 24 sec. video: Här bärs Greta bort av tyska poliser igen (SVT.se, Mar 16, 2023)
Sweden w/ 30 sec. video: Timmar efter domen – Greta Thunberg genomför ny klimataktion i Malmö (SVT.se, July 24, 2023)

The Swedish version is a bit more peaceful in comparison to the first video from Germany, but in the second German video she seems to be getting the celebrity treatment.

In the second video, somebody says, "Now you'll get famous," to the guy who's not in uniform, apparently, and I think that 'for being filmed with Greta Thunberg' is implied.

Greta Thunberg pulls out of Edinburgh Book Festival over 'greenwashing'

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has pulled out of an appearance at the Edinburgh International Book Festival over its links to the fossil fuel industry.

She had been due to attend an event at the annual festival on 13 August.

But she said she would now not do so because the festival receives sponsorship from the Baillie Gifford investment firm.

She claimed Baillie Gifford "invests heavily in the fossil fuel industry".

This is one of the very good guys:
"In recent years, he [James Hansen] has become a climate activist to mitigate the effects of global warming, on a few occasions leading to his arrest." (Wikipedia)
When he gave up on persuading politicians to put an end to CO2 emission.

Ironically, the backlash happened because people forgot that she's deeply disturbed, and they had to be reminded.

Also ironically, the (accidental) display of an arguably anti-Semitic meme is outrageous and unacceptable when Greta Thunberg does it. But intentionally going out and murdering Jews because of how unabashedly anti-Semitic you are is just the act of a brave campaigner.

I see that some people also have to be reminded that she was labelled "deeply disturbed" by one of Australia's most notorious rightist shock jocks, puppet of the Murdoch empire, and all round misogynistic ****wit Andrew Bolt.

Stopped clock.

She's also labelled as deeply disturbed by sad old white men who feel she's some threat to their long-departed manhood.

I love the way those heroes are happy to call a little girl names from behind their keyboard. More power to her for ignoring the hell out of them.

Stopped clock.

Problem is, in the case of Bolt, he's not just stopped the clock but smashed it with a 12" lump hammer, stomped down on the broken pieces with steel toecaps and thrown the remains off a high cliff.

It is always best policy to autoatically take the opposite view of Bolt.

No, people didn't forget what she never was. As for her autism, she is not exactly shy about reminding people:

There doesn't appear to be anything accidental about her Twitter/X thread, and as for her alleged anti-Semitism, you should ask her Jewish friends about it:
Week 270. Today we strike in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza. The world needs to speak up and call for an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all civilians affected.

Danish anti-Muslims currently claim that a group of young Danish Jews criticizing Netanyahu's right-wing Zionism are "self-hating."
Conservatives are rarely able to distinguish between anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.

Siding with Hamas is objectively anti-Semitic.

Thunberg's cute little octopus is both a basic mood indicator doll for autistic people, and also a classic icon of anti-Semitism. I don't think she's anti-Semitic because of the doll. I just think maybe her Jewish friends should have warned her that it's a bad look when siding with Hamas.

On the other hand, she is siding with Hamas. I think it's fair to think she's anti-Semitic on that basis.

Also, what's more anti-Semitic in your opinion? Unknowingly displaying an octopus, in a pro-Hamas statement? Or knowingly supporting the killing of Jews?

ETA: I note that this is yet another installment of Thunberg's Friday Strike show. Did we ever figure out if she's actually striking against anything these days, when she says, "we are striking"?

Did she mention Hamas? One of the things I've observed is that there are plenty of people who want to advocate for Palestinians but consider Hamas irredeemable.

Too bad for your argument that she doesn't side with Hamas. Maybe you should take the time to read what she actually writes instead of relying on your imagination:
It goes without saying - or so I thought - that I’m against the horrific attacks by hamas. As I said, “the world needs to speak up and call for an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all civilians affected.”

I didn't know that, so I don't find it hard to believe that she didn't either. Or that her (young) Jewish friends also didn't.

No, she doesn't side with Hamas on the first hand, and she also doesn't side with Hamas on the other. She sides with Palestine. What you think is fair based on your imagination of what she thinks and does is irrelevant and has nothing to do with her.

Also, what's more anti-Semitic in your opinion? Unknowingly displaying an octopus, in a pro-Hamas statement? Or knowingly supporting the killing of Jews?

What's worse in your opinion, to keep repeating that she writes pro-Hamas statements or to display an octopus that some people, Thunberg not being one of them, think is a symbol of anti-Semitism? And where exactly did she support the killing of Jews? It's another lie based on what you want to be true but isn't.

ETA: I note that this is yet another installment of Thunberg's Friday Strike show. Did we ever figure out if she's actually striking against anything these days, when she says, "we are striking"?

Maybe you should look it up instead of turning it into a question about what your imaginary 'we' did or didn't figure out.

ETA: Repeating lies until people believe that the lies are probably true may work for Trump, but the strategy doesn't work for everybody.

To certain people every Palestinian is a terrorist, and Israel is right to consider them üntermenschen.

She sided with Palestinians, not with Hamas.

A distinction that I would take much more seriously if there were any Palestinian movement to repudiate Hamas.

Either the Palestinians have no agency in this, in which case they're puppets of Hamas and the distinction is meaningless...

... Or the Palestinians do have agency, which they have clearly exercised to side with Hamas. There's no flood of Gazans at the Israeli and Egyptian checkpoints, claiming refugee status on account of how evil Hamas is and how they want nothing to do with Hamas's terrorist campaign on their behalf. There's no stream of Palestinians moving from Gaza to the West Bank, on account of how they don't side with Hamas and want to get away from them and their war.

If it walks like a duck, you can't say you're pro-duck but anti-quack. Well, you can say that, obviously. But it just makes you look like a useful idiot for quacks.

Like I already said about this quackpot theory:

It's no lie, to say that Gazans aren't repudiating Hamas, aren't doing everything they can to escape the Hamas regime. It's no lie to say that Palestinians in general aren't repudiating Hamas, aren't doing everything they can to rescue their Gazan brothers and sisters from that terrorist regime. You can't say that you side with Palestinians but not Hamas, because Palestinians themselves side with Hamas.

Ah, the voice of white privilege from an armchair thousands of miles away.

Why don't those ignorant sand ******* just up and leave? I hear boat trips to Europe are the shiz!

We have threads to discuss the conflict in the Middle East; this isn't one of them. Please remain on topic.

The Israeli Ministry of Education said that it plans to remove any reference of environmental activist Greta Thunberg from school materials after the young Swedish activist posted a pro-Palestinian message on social media.
(...)
Anati Mansbury, foreign press coordinator for Israel's Education Ministry, told Newsweek in a statement on Tuesday that after Thunberg's "recent statements in support of Gaza without condemning Hamas, the Israel Ministry of Education has decided to remove various references in the educational curriculum that present Thunberg as a role model and a source of inspiration for youth."
Israel Removes Greta Thunberg from Curriculum over Pro-Palestinian Message (Newsweek, Oct 24, 2023)

Apparently, Israel's Education Ministry also reads only headlines and didn't notice (or care about) what Thunberg wrote about Hamas.
As for anti-Zionism ≠ anti-Semitism: Debunking the myth that anti-Zionism is antisemitic (TheGuardian, Mar 7, 2019).
The article explains why many conservatives are pro-Zionists and anti-Semites. I have seen no indication that Thunberg can't distinguish between the the two attitudes.
