'Heuermann's attorney, Michael Brown, said after the court hearing that the evidence against his client is "extremely circumstantial in nature." He also described Heuermann as in tears as he told him "I didn't do this," denying the charges made against him.'

Tears don't prove innocence, per se. Defendant is, however, a wealthy architect and married father allegedly linked with 3 or 4 of 11 human remains found in the area over years.

Yeah, I saw that this morning and looked into it a bit. I hadn't even heard about the Gilgo Beach murders until this story broke.

Looking pretty likely that he's the guy, especially with the DNA evidence they have.

The 25-page charging document (behind paywall, sorry) lays out a strong case.

A witness "identified a first-generation Chevrolet Avalanche as the vehicle believed to have been driven by her killer."

The cell phone evidence is very strong. The killer communicated with his victims using burner phones, and also used cell phones belonging to a couple of his victims after their deaths, including taunting calls to one victim's family. Cell phone records show the burner phones were generally used in the vicinity of the accused's residence, workplace, and (near the time of his victim's disappearances) victim's residences. Cell phone records also showed that, following at least two of the killings, the killer's phones moved in tandem with the burner phones in use at the time.

The charging document includes photographs of the accused purchasing additional minutes for one of the burner phones.

A text sent by the probable killer tied one of the burner phones to both a Chevrolet Avalanche and a witness's physical description of the probable killer. The accused matches that physical description and drove a Chevrolet Avalanche.

Travel records show the accused's wife was away during the three most recent of the charged homicides; said travel records were not available for the oldest of the charged homicides.

Records obtained from Verizon showed that Defendant Heuermann's cellphone was used on December 11, 2022, for a period of over three hours to access the fictitious [redacted] AOL Account. Similarly, records obtained from T-Mobile show that burner cellphone [redacted] was used on multiple dates including November 8, 2022, to access this account.

A review of call records for these two additional burner cellphones revealed that both cellphones were used extensively between 2021 and 2023 for prostitution-related contacts....

Those accounts were "used to conduct thousands of searches related to sex workers, sadistic, torture-related pornography and child pornography, including [a long list of redacted lines]...The [redacted] Email Account was also used to conduct in excess of two-hundred (200) searches, between March 2022 and June 2023, related to active and known serial killers, the specific disappearances and murders of [names of four victims], and the investigation of their murders." Another long list of redacted lines follows.

A search warrant conducted on the fictitious [redacted] AOL Account further revealed "selfie" photographs that appeared to have been taken by Defendant Rex Heuermann of himself (see below) and sent to other persons to solicit and arrange for sexual activity, further linking Heuermann to the fictitious email account and the burner cellphone, [redacted], used to establish the account.
The charging document includes one of those selfies.

Only then did investigators go after DNA evidence, which appears to tie both the accused and his wife's hair to the victims. (No one is suggesting the wife had anything to do with the killings, but a bit of what appears to be her hair was found with one of the victims.)

Yup that definitely meets the description of "extremely circumstantial". It will be very difficult to explain that all away.

Statements from the Governor and Police Commissioner

“Yes, the day has finally come when someone so … depraved of heart who would kill individuals, innocent individuals in the prime of their lives, their young lives, is finally brought to justice,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Friday. “We are hoping that this will bring justice to this individual but also peace to the families.” CNN

"'Rex Heuermann is a demon that walks amongst us, a predator that ruined families,' Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said." NBC

"(c) The prosecutor should not make, cause to be made, or authorize or condone the making of, a public statement that the prosecutor knows or reasonably should know will have a substantial likelihood of materially prejudicing a criminal proceeding or heightening public condemnation of the accused, but the prosecutor may make statements that inform the public of the nature and extent of the prosecutor’s or law enforcement actions and serve a legitimate law enforcement purpose. The prosecutor may make a public statement explaining why criminal charges have been declined or dismissed, but must take care not to imply guilt or otherwise prejudice the interests of victims, witnesses or subjects of an investigation. A prosecutor’s public statements should otherwise be consistent with the ABA Standards on Fair Trial and Public Discourse." ABA

If the prosecutor had said what the Governor or Police Commissioner had said, that would be over the line IMO. The prosecutor has been more circumspect, from what I found.

Not sure why this is considered News but it showed up on AOL today.

Prosecutors: Rex Heuermann's cheek swab matches DNA found on pizza box

I thought they had a match back in July?

"DNA can be transferred. DNA can be transferred from me going up to the cameraman and shaking his hand," defense attorney Michael Brown said.

It would be interesting to hear the defense' theory about how Heuermann's DNA ended up on that pizza.

Had Heuermann been shaking hands at the Pizza place?

Can always hope the cops fouled up chain of custody for the forensic evidence, which considering the total lack of professionalism among US police, isn't really that much of a stretch.

A recent episode of The Daily, a New York Times podcast, was a very interesting listen.

There is a text article of the same thing which is probably paywalled.

The Sunday Read: The Botched Hunt for the Gilgo Beach Killer (podcast, The Daily)

It's a jaw-dropping account of very corrupt police department and district attorney, who failed for years to connect the dots because it just wasn't a very high priority for them apparently. Not as important as their corruption and political shenanigans. Both a former police chief and former DA have been convicted of various crimes.

The Botched Hunt for the Gilgo Beach Killer (text version, paywalled)
This was, quite obviously, a serial-killer case. The only person not saying as much was the Suffolk County police commissioner, Richard Dormer. “I don’t want anyone to think we have a Jack the Ripper running around Suffolk County with blood dripping from a knife,” he said in a frenzied news conference. In fact, they had something almost exactly like that.

Personally I listened to in via Apple podcasts, so you can probably find it on your favorite podcast app too.

It's almost comical just how bad the police and DA were in this case.

It is a modern Jack the Ripper as his targets were almost all female sex workers (although, is that too a myth? I'm not sure if that was necessarily true for all of victims of the original "Jack the Ripper"?)
