George Santos charged with defrauding campaign donors

So, was he a drag performer? Would that be enough for the Republicans to drop him?

Lots of people don't care if Santos lies about his history, but scam a homeless veteran who had lost his job out of the money raised to save his dog's life? That is a hanging offense in a lot of people's view...including mine. Don't mess with dog lovers.

OK, then! :D

I was looking at this previously and trying to figure out why it seemed somehow..."wrong". I think I have spotted it: The lenses in his spectacles are not prescription. They have little no distortion, so they are plain glass. These look to be "show" spectacles only, not really necessary.

So those posters above who said he has taken to wearing specs to look "intellectual"? You are quite right! :)

Have you seen the pictures of George Santos in drag? It sure looks like him.

Yes, but I'm withholding judgment on that. I don't think a grainy picture is enough to determine if that's Santos or not.

Doesn't look grainy to me. Still, that could be his doppelganger.

I so much want it to be him. I wouldn't care if it was other than the fact it's another lie. He's denying it is him.

I agree. And as I noted the drag queen isn't thick enough in the middle to add any certainty to the claim.

It can be hard to discern optical power where minor correction for myopia or presbyopia is present. And even harder if the correction is only for astigmatism.

Not everyone requires the proverbial coke bottle bottoms. 😀

Diagree, there's a small distortion on the bottom of his right lens and a slight curve to it, all of the non-prescription lenses I've seen are flat

I'm just going on the so far universal standard that literally everything Republicans pretend to be scared of / worried about is a confession.

He's a Republican. He hates drag queens. That's enough to empirically predict he was a drag queen even without any photo evidence.

And yeah I'm only a little joking.

I thought this was going to be something from the Onion. But apparently it's real.
“Unfortunately on the 9th of March I became symptomatic with what we all know now very well, COVID-19 a.k.a coronavirus, commonly known as the Chinese flu,” he said, with a wry giggle. “On the 11th I ended up in the hospital. It was really bad, fever, body aches.”

Santos was in particular danger from COVID-19, he explained, because of other serious health issues.

“I have an immunodeficiency and I have acute chronic bronchitis. I also battled a brain tumor a couple of years ago, and I had radiation done, which really lowers your immunity in general,” he told the podcast hosts. “Radiation isn’t a game. I’m susceptible to cancer. It’s in my DNA.”
.....
On March 14, 2020, the day that Santos originally said he received his own positive test for coronavirus and was bedridden with fever, his campaign tweeted a press release on the unfolding COVID-19 crisis including a lengthy quote from Santos, and praising then-President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency. The tweet made no mention of Santos’ own illness.

On March 18, 2020, four days after he originally claimed he had received a positive test and was very sick with COVID, Santos appeared on Fox Business, showing no signs of illness. However, during a COVID town hall that Santos hosted in April 2020, he said that he was still symptomatic through March 18.

This isn't just lying. This is genuine lunacy.

Yeah seriously.

If you want to run for office why WOULDN'T you just lie horrible lies about the stupidest thing you can think of?

The Daily Beast reports that Santos appeared on a local conservative podcast in late March 2020 and gave a harrowing account of his bout with Covid19.
Santos said he was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in Queens by ambulance, placed on a gurney on arrival, and spent around five hours in a “plastic bubble” with an “air filter” as the hospital had run out of isolation rooms. He said he was given a chest X-ray, which came back clear. Santos said he was then swabbed for COVID-19, and on March 14 he received a positive result. He said he spent days with a high fever, hallucinating and confused. Daily Beast link

Six months later his recall of events had changed considerably.
In a September 2020 interview with local outlet The Island Now, Santos said Elmhurst Hospital provided him with no treatment other than recommending Advil for his fever.

I agree with the Long Island GOP leader who said the other day, when you lie like this it's not just fibbing, it's evidence of some underlying mental or emotional health disorder.

So in another forum full of mostly right-wing gun owners, most folks think Santos should stick around and NOT be expelled, since "the Democrats also lie about their background".

Figures.

Absent misbehavior while in office, evidence he's a foreign agent or something actively serious he shouldn't be expelled. That a district was foolish enough to elect him is what it is.

But given evidence that he's committed blatant fraud running sham investment schemes, he should be prosecuted for such, congressman or no. The new trend of being legally immune to everything once things become even remotely political (Gaetz) has to stop.

ETA: also Jordan.

Actually I'm just going to list all the Republican congress critters who I believe haven't been criming:

Agreed. But this photo is at an angle to the spectacle lens. And even the slightest magnifications will create a misalignment effect. Easiest way to tell is if the outline of the face outside the spectacles does not line up with the outline inside the spectacles. In this case, they align almost perfectly, so the lens has no magnification - it is flat glass. The only "operational" part of these specs is the thick frame to make him look more "brainy" or something.

Not seeing it in this pic... Maybe I need to get my own specs checked?? ;)

This all reminds me of a Norm Macdonald bit:

You ever lie for no reason at all? Just all of sudden, a big lie spills out of your evil head. Like a guy will come up to you, "Hey, did you ever see that movie with Meryl Streep and a horse?" And you go, "Yes." In the back of your head, you're like, "What in the hell am I lying about over here? I stand to gain nothing by this lie."

Being criminally immune is a whole different story from expelling an elected representative. Charge them with crimes, fine. Throw them in jail, fine.

However, that district elected him and I'm never going to be in favor of expelling someone from Congress based on allegations or even convictions for past criminal behavior.

He isn't at all the person the voters thought he was. That district didn't elect him.

This is unknowable.

Even if true they have an absolute right to be recklessly negligent in their voting. A local paper broke this scandal before the election. It was a GOP leaning paper that reluctantly endorsed the Democrat.

We can't go challenging the validity of elections based on the electorate maybe being asleep at the switch.

He made believe he was someone that he is not. He did not allow his voters to know who he actually was on Election Day. That's grounds for expulsion.

A reporter writes his own autobiography, Santos-style:
My flight was in its final descent into Long Island MacArthur Airport, the world’s busiest. From the first-class cabin of my Southwest Airlines flight, I could see, to the north, the great mountains of Long Island’s North Shore, where I trained before winning gold in the giant slalom in Lillehammer. To the south, I could see the beaches where I caught the Great White that inspired the movie “Jaws.”
