General UK politics VIII - The Last Tory

I worked closely with a number of board members of a major water utility in the late 90s. Most of them could have been replaced with garden gnomes to the benefit of the company.
I remember hearing on the Today programme, sometime in the late 80s, that a water company was defending pay rises given to their board on the grounds that they hadn't had a performance-related bonus. But I was half asleep (my alarm clock was set to play Radio 4 at 8am) so I might have dreamed it.

But I also remember which specific water company it was, and this detail makes me think I didn't imagine it.

Your assessment is not the most surprising thing I have read today

I add coffee mate to my coffee along with the milk.
I suppose that counts as milk powder.

Where I used to work, they claimed that coffee mate was grated cow hooves...

(Not the most ridiculous claim that was often voiced.)

When I told them what gelatin and gelly were, i.e. bones and skin, they were a bit shocked.

(Yes I know you can get vegan jellies, but still.)

During my long career I have advised dozens of Boards and never failed to be depressed at how few of their members were capable of doing basic stuff such as reading and understanding financial statements. Obviously you have specialists for the most complex things, but the amount of handholding along the lines of ‘with this number so high and that number so low you’ll be out of business within a year’…

UK economy grew more than expected in first three months of year.

But according to the Tories and Reform, Reeves has crashed the economy and it's a disaster for Britain

The economy expanded by 0.7% in the January-to-March period, which was stronger than the 0.6% that analysts had forecast.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said growth was largely driven by the UK services sector, although production also "grew significantly"
Business investment is up nearly 6% on the quarter and the service sector is doing well as well.

Yesterday at PMQ BadEnoch claimed that the department store 'Beales' was closing down because of Rachel Reeves and the employer's NI rise conveniently ignoring the fact that it was part of a 23 shop chain that went bankrupt in 2020, pre COVID & under [Checks notes] the Tories, three of the stores were subsequently reopened but the other two have already closed.

A newly elected Leicestershire county councillor was sacked from the police last year for breaching professional standards on "honesty and integrity, discreditable conduct, orders and instructions, and duties and responsibilities".

Andrew Hamilton-Gray won a seat in Loughborough for Reform, with almost 40% of the vote.

Posting on social media after his election on 1 May, Hamilton-Gray said he had spent most of his life "serving the Crown".

He pledged to serve Loughborough North West "with honour, integrity and transparency".

Now it has emerged that he was a former police officer, and had been dismissed from Leicestershire Police in January 2024.

Andrew Husband has been selected as Reform UK group leader in County Durham, so is in line to become the leader of Durham County Council next week. He describes COVID vaccines as genocide and a crime against humanity.

Darren Grimes has been made deputy group leader so he is in line to be deputy leader of the council. He says they have "plans up their sleeves" for getting asylum seekers out of Durham.

Both newly elected with no experience.
We are no longer a serious country.

Navy blue double breasted waistcoat with a blue check single breasted Matalan suit and a shirt about 3 sizes too big for him.

Correction: Untergruppenfuhrer.

I keep wondering if those are so young because they are more naive than the older Reform councillors and so have ended up where they have more legal responsibilities.

Via the Private Eye Paul Foot awards and this shocking video about lead contamination in the UK.

And the paper involved

There also might be little choice, I wasn't entirely joking about the Young Conservatives, these would have been the freaky, misfit, Tory Boy Lites that would have been activists, canvassers, assistants or researchers for local MPs for a few years until they moved on, got laid or got selected to stand in an unwinnable seat to pay their dues & maybe get a one with a chance next time.. Instead they've managed to skip the whole 'learning how things work' stage and jump straight to ruining people's lives for real.

This man was in the Cabinet

John Redwood

We used to sell few sausages to the EU before they stopped our exports. The UK should not surrender our fish and our right to make our own laws in order to sell a few sausages to them.

Apropos of nothing, someone in a twitter chat group just posted a link to this Blackadder III video clip.

Apparently Charles Pugsley had a £50,000 a year private education and is a Landlord of several housing properties.
