General UK politics VIII - The Last Tory

Conservative Home on how Brexit shows the was in ourselves.

The last paragraph must surely show how self-unaware these Brexiters are, and how large the elephant in the room actually is:
But an end to grand illusions can be the start of something greater. Knowing how bad things really are can be wearying, but can also be a spur to action. A hard rain still needs to fall.

People on one of my other forums are overjoyed that Reform are ahead in the polls. I suppose someone has to be.

How has leaving not been as disastrous as many remainers thought it would be? Well the only way that was lessened to any degree was by not leaving very quickly and not gaining back our apparent lost sovereignty.

Only in their own very selective polls.

'On the ground' they have failed to make any headway. They have only gained 7 council seats out of over 180 contested since the general election.
The best they managed in the last bunch a couple of weeks ago was third place.

They have around 50 councillors altogether and all but the 7 already mentioned are defections from the Tories or independents.

Its a Sky News/YouGov poll.

Suella says

"Why is Starmer so desperate to give up UK sovereign territory?
The Mauritians are not that keen, the Chagossians don’t want it and our closest ally, the Americans don’t support it.
Because he’s part of the globalist, liberal elite who are ashamed of Britain and our history, don’t care about our security and believe that Britain’s role is to apologise and appease, whilst all the time worshipping at the altar of international law.
He brings nothing but shame to this country.
We need to rediscover our self- respect, our self-confidence and our pride as a nation.
That’s what the British people are crying out for."

Respecting international law? How dare he!
Really what worries me is that we could go the same way as the USA. Anyone who cares to pay attention will know Farage's policies would be a disaster but he will just yell about 'immigration' and 'the cost of living' and a friendly media will go along, knowing he's going to line the pockets of their billionaire owners.

Suella is an idiot. Don't be like Suella.

She forgets that British history includes a massive amount of conquest and exploitation of her ancestors. Perhaps she wants that back?

Was this the deal that the UK government had been negotiating since 2022?

Ant Middleton, ex military hooligan standing for the job of London Mayor is considering taking Wikipedia to court for publishing false and malicious information about him

"Their damaging and false statement that I was arrested in 2012 for unlawfully wounding a ‘female’ police officer couldn’t be further from the truth and I’m astonished that they would write something so personal and career damaging without complete reassurance of the facts! I have never laid a finger on a woman and I never will."

In May 2013 he was found guilty of unlawfully wounding PC Christopher Brooksbank and for common assault on PC Katherine Alison.

Memory lapses, now? Is that a "positive" attribute?

Gets better he claims his company didn't go bust, it just went in to liquidation. It's fake news apparently.

When it "went in to liquidation" it owed £1.2 million HMRC.

He's Reform UK's candidate for Mayor of London so that and the prison time for assaulting the police are par for the course.

Reform UK job requirements.

Apparently Starmer will be forced to step down tomorrow after PMQs when Kemi asks him about his lockdown breach when he met his voice coach.

The police will be forced to investigate and it will be the end for him and Labour.

Will this be another case of Tories who don't understand calendars?

Banning phones in schools is not linked to pupils getting higher grades or having better mental wellbeing, the first study of its kind suggests.

Students' sleep, classroom behaviour, exercise or how long they spend on their phones overall also seems to be no different for schools with phone bans and schools without, the academics found.

But they did find that spending longer on smartphones and social media in general was linked with worse results for all of those measures.

The first study in the world to look at school phone rules alongside measures of pupil health and education feeds into a fierce debate that has played out in homes and schools in recent years.

Dr Victoria Goodyear, the study's lead author, told the BBC the findings were not "against" smartphone bans in schools, but "what we're suggesting is that those bans in isolation are not enough to tackle the negative impacts".

Not really surprising. The solution is to remove smartphones and unsupervised direct internet usage for under 16s.
Why 16? I know an 18-year old who is stupidifying herself with endless tik-tok’ing. This is where she informs herself of what is going on in the world.

We did at least end PMQs on a lighter note when Farage tried to ask a question. I say tried as it took him three goes to get to the end as MPs on all sides were laughing at him. Nige doesn’t recognise the difference between being laughed at and laughed with. Like all narcissists, he only registers the attention. What was provoking the laughter was Nige demanding an answer to what he should say to his 25,000 constituents in Clacton.

“Sorry,” suggested dozens of MPs. “Where the hell am I?”

Hansard just says, "[interruption]".

Because that is the age in the UK we start to consider them becoming an adult.
Yes, you are right of course. But I think that train has departed, if you have that expression in English. Actually, the problem is far worse: I know nobody below 40 who ever gets news outside social media, and I doubt the problem is different in England.

I have no idea how to change the situation.

Sky News "Trump wants to turn Gaza into the Riviera of the Middle East—do you agree?"

Farage "I love ambition, He's got off on the most extraordinary start in office.

Kemi says Immigrants should only be able to apply for British citizenship after being in the UK for 15 years rather than the current six,

She also said indefinite leave to remain, which paves the way for citizenship, should not be granted to those who have criminal records or who had claimed benefits or social housing.

She says the period before someone can apply for ILR should be extended from five to 10 years and people should then have to wait a further five years before seeking citizenship.

It's her first official policy announcement as leader.
