When we moved to Xenfora some of the signature options didn't come over. In the old software signatures were limited by a character limit, on Xenfora there are more options and there is a character number and number of lines limit. I've set maximum number of lines to 4 and unlimited characters.

This movie and its ludicrous crop of Oscar nominations were commissioned by Disney to draw attention away from the dumpster fire surrounding their new Snow White movie.

I will not elaborate. Ask reddit if you need context.

If there's one thing we can say about Emilia Perez, it's that there's no bollocks.

In the words of that catchy showtune: "from penis to vaginaaa".

I imagine the pitch meeting went something like this:

"We're going to have a movie where a transgender character is the star!"
"That's great, transgenders are hot right now."
"And the transgender person is a former cartel boss."
"Okay didn't see that coming but subverting expectations is tight!"
"The film is going to be set in Mexico, but we'll film it in Paris."
"At least we'll have some Mexican actors, right?"
"Of course! Selena Gomez is in it."
"I thought she was born in Texas."
"But her name does end in a "z."
"Good point. No doubt the director has a wealth of experience to draw on about Mexico?"
"He's even been there."
"But we do at least have a transgender actor for the protagonist?"
"Oh, yes. "
"Sounds like I need to dust off the shelf for another Oscar!"

Currently rated at 72% by pros at Rotten Tomatoes; audiences have it at 17%.

Disney has a lot of influence in Hollywood, but the Academy does its own thing. The Snow White thing is just the latest live-action dumpster fire for Disney, and there will be others in the future. The circus around Emilia Perez is only a big deal IN Hollywood. Hard to say how it plays out. The whole digging up five year-old tweets made by the star doesn't have the same kind of cancellation power it once had when Twitter was a big thing.

This year Disney became the first studio to pass the $5 billion dollar mark at the box office since the COVID pandemic. People on Youtube bitched and whined about Mufasa but it passed $685 million in the middle of February, latest figures I could find. Even with the usual take the production budget and double it estimate for the break even point its solidly into profit. I bring this up because the idea that given their recent track record anyone at Disney is going to care about people pissing and moaning about Snow White is vanishingly unlikely. More likely reason for all the nominations is because the people handing out the nominations wanted to annoy the people who were were complaining about the movie in the first place.

I can say that I genuinely had not heard of this movie or its thirteen Oscar nominations.

That probably says more about me than about the movie though.

For anyone else out of the loop:

GLAAD passed over “Emilia Pérez” in its annual awards. The LGBTQ rights alliance declared the movie “a profoundly retrograde portrayal of a trans woman” and “a step backward for trans representation.”
No mention of Disney being involved in the making of this movie. The rights for it were purchased by Netflix, which isn't Disney.

Didn't get a great reception in Mexico either.

Meanwhile, war, famine, torture, unchecked climate change, and the end of democracy and human rights. This movie is a true threat to humankind and must be stopped. We can let everything else remain on the back burner until it boils over, problem solved.

PS - That girl playing Snow White is cute as a button. So nice that as what "us" refers to changes, "our" myths change to reflect that. Every little girl deserves to see herself included in the childhood dreams that underpin a supposedly shared cultural ethos. That, or into the wood chipper, right boss?

It's a conspiracy theory.

Eh, I'll stick with 'I'm in love with the Villainess' thanks.
