Chimera & Rape

I don't see what difference it would make for rape. Only if the rape isn't reported immediately and no semen is left to test and a child is born because of the rape and the child happens to be a chimera. It's not a phenomenon of sperm.

It might come into play with paternity tests or paternity claims.

As the article explains, the mouth swab DNA might not match the DNA in the semen. Different DNA from different locations. Or, do they actually test a semen sample from suspects?

That is exactly what I am arguing

Women gets raped, get a DNA signature from a rape kit.
have a likely suspect and have a mouth swab
DNA of mouth swab does not match rape kit.

It would make for a horrifically interesting case.

The easiest possibility is that the rapist leaves more than semen behind. A stray hair might show two sets of DNA, which would be cause for further testing.

Possibility two is that the DNA recovered doesn't match the suspect, but looks like a relative of the suspect. That would be enough to compel more tests.

Third, there might be overwhelming evidence against the suspect. Even if a DNA test came back negative, a really sharp prosecutor might convince a judge to compel another test.

But there is a non-zero chance that a chimera could get away with rape. Of course, with the rarity of chimeras and the rarity of rapists, you're talking about a very small pool of people.

Life imitating art?

They did this on CSI. It took Gil less than an hour to figure it out. (Season 4, Episode 23. "Bloodlines")

Hmmm. House also figured out a medical case was a chimera in less than an hour, too.

They're real good.

Or you are the blessed* Hanniblal Lecter clone, designed to survive one episode every year en route to a showdown at the series** finale.

* Pronounced bless-said.

I would argue that police are far less competent than they are at CSI

I would argue that real investigators don't have as good script writers as they have for CSI (in fact I think its more of an improv program), they get far fewer resources, and far less time to spend on individual cases.

chimeras and misleading evidence

"Another scientific development that has caused concern is the discovery of individuals who have two distinct DNA strands in their bodies. Known as chimeras, they have unusual DNA profiles that can come about either because of a blood transfusion or because two embryos merged in their mother's uterus. Estimates of the number of chimeras range from a tiny proportion of the population up to 10 per cent.

Catherine Arcabascio, a law professor at Nova Southeastern University, said in a recent scholarly article a chimera can potentially leave misleading DNA deposits at a crime scene." link

Even a cracker jack team of forensics technicians, I don't blame them for having trouble with chimera.
